Puerto Rico drops plan to build natural gas pipeline that was opposed by many islanders

Washington Post -- The government of Puerto Rico has formally withdrawn plans to build a natural gas pipeline after investing more than $50 million in a project that provoked strong opposition from islanders and environmentalists.

Nancy Sticht, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said Friday that the agency received a letter requesting the project be abandoned.

Gov. Luis Fortuno originally backed the project as a way to reduce dependence on oil. He said the 92-mile (148-kilometer) pipeline would have saved $1 billion a year and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 64 percent.

Tropical Puerto Rico needed natural gas pipelines like fish need bicycles. Solar hot water and solar PV electric can still replace oil and also reduce emissions even further.

BM4225 said it best!

"The pipeline was a bad thing; it will create jobs, reduce depence on imports, lower energy cost as well as the funds give to them by our country to assist their people."

At least they are still perusing this concept as well as other alternative sources.

So sad that the environmentalists are active in Puerto Rico. Even they can't escape the green weenies. No wonder the majority of Puerto Ricans don't really want to become the 51st state. (Or the 58th state if your Barrack Hussein Obama)

They could prabably get a line of islanders and carry it in bucket. Pay them all 50 cents a day. It would double their GDP

@teamsimons

It's an island that is just over 100 miles east to west and about 40 north to south. It's roughly the size of Southeast Pennsylvania, from Harrisburg-East, and from the northern border of Philadelphia - South.

The pipeline would reduce or eliminate the need for tanker trucks and ships.
