Making A Federal Case Out Of Odometer Fraud

Forbes -- You know, not every lawsuit involves complex issues of law – not every case is filled with earth-shattering allegations. Sometimes the law is mundane. However, just because a case involves some familiar allegations and easily understandable facts doesn’t render the matter uninteresting. For example, take the federal lawsuit in the District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana against Beau Michael Guidry of Baton Rouge, LA., the owner of Affordable Imports in Denham Springs, LA.

According to federal prosecutors, Guidry purchased high-mileage motor vehicles online through eBay and from wholesale automobile auctions in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. At the time that Guidry resold the vehicles at his lot or on eBay, many of the vehicles were over ten-years old.

This was an old tactic of used car dealers. It is good that it is now a Federal felony.

It was stupid to stop making dealers certify the mileage after 10 years.

That opened up this opportunity for dealers.

That said, I spent many years on the auction blocks and as a low end, high mileage car dealer. Odometer fraud is nowhere near as common as a lot of people think. The huge number of cars with 160-300k miles proves that.

I had the miles rolled back on one car...it had 59,900 miles, I had the miles rolled back to 49,900, got the motor rebuilt by Chrysler and then rolled the miles back up where they were.

So no customer got cheated, Just Chrysler. And most of my cars had lots higher mileage.

Mileage means a lot less than condition on older cars...to everyone except the stupid public.

We should have a strict licensing system for car dealers and revoke the licenses of scum who engage in dirty tricks such as this. Shut the corrupt dealers down.

The article did not say what his sentence was on the three counts he plead guilty to? Probably got probation. Should have to go behind bars for a couple years.
