Legislature bans texting while driving

Anchorage Daily News online -- Associated Press

The Alaska Legislature has passed an explicit ban on texting while driving.

The Senate passed HB255 on Sunday, the last scheduled day of session. The House passed the bill earlier.

Lawmakers in 2008 passed legislation intended to ban texting while driving though it didn't say texting in the law. A magistrate in Kenai last year ruled the Legislature should have been explicit if it meant to prohibit the activity.

Language in HB255 states that texting while driving has been illegal since the 2008 law was passed and the magistrate's decision is "legally incorrect."

The bill states a person commits the crime of driving while texting if he or she reads or types a text or other nonvoice message or

I would really like to have texting while walking made illegal: in a crosswalk, in a parking lot. We drivers now have to contend with text Zombies wandering into traffic, holding up traffic stopping to text in the crosswalk in the middle of a traffic lane!

Geez and I thought Alaska was a 'conservative' state. Well they are socially conservative and economic big government liberals.

This has nothing to do with the price of fuel but I agreed you should not be allowed to text while driving.

Hands free or not, communicating on a phone while driving should be illegal.

This ban needs to be legislated in all 50 states.
I'm surprised Obama hasn't enacted thousands of regulations with this issue.

I see policemen in Florida that totally ignore people using cell phones while driving, let alone the texting. Ignorant people that have to text to risk lives.

Illegal here in New Jersey, but every day I see lots of people texting while driving.

Cops seem oblivious to it, unless there is an accident. They ask for, license, registration, proof of insurance and your cell phone so they can see if you were using it when the accident happened.

Now if they could do something about the people who walk into traffic because they are texting.

It is up to the texter to know better not to text while driving.

Driving while texting is also up to the driver to know that driving while texting could be harmful to the drivers and commuters health.

And they propose to enforce this how? My ne phone allows one to talk and have your message translated into text. Next thing you know, some genius will invent a phone on which you just talk directly to the other person. Oh, wait. We used to DO that, didn't we?
