Household spending on gas in 2012 set record

Columbus Dispatch -- U.S. households spent a record sum on gasoline last year, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said yesterday. A greater share of their income went to motor-fuel costs than at any other time since the 1980s.

The average household expenditure on gasoline hit $2,912 in 2012, the agency said, or just less than 4 percent of pretax income, as higher prices at the pump canceled out the effect of more-efficient vehicles.

“This was the highest estimated percentage of household income spent on gasoline in nearly three decades, with the exception of 2008, when the average household spent a similar amount,” the agency said.

“Although overall gasoline consumption has decreased in recent years, a rise in average gasoline prices has led to higher overall household gasoline expenditures.”...

Household spending on gas in 2012 set record? Really! Really!
Higher fuel costs, more spending and the same distance traveled to work, the store and Grandma's house.
Big Oil and Big Gas sells fuel and natural gas on the world market for higher prices to other countries.
The US ‘oil and natural gas resources’ belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! The price at the pump needs to go down to $2/gallon - *$3, *$3.50/gallon or *$4.00 is Not the new low!
More Refineries are Not the answer, Stop exporting fuel is!
Take care of the domestic fuel market first and above all else!
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

and those findings are any surprise to anyone? Too bad, lots of good (taxpayer) money was probably wasted on this study.

It is to be expected, with prices as high as they are. Not every one can afford to spend $30,000 to $50,000 on new efficient vehicles.

Oil prices are set world wide. When our Dollar is undermined through spending beyond our means, all prices rise.

gov't says there's No inflation ??? What does your check book say??

Mine says inflation is getting worse.

This is accurate from my experience. Gas price increases reduce consumer discretionary spending and hurt sales of many things.

I remember a statement made in school back in 1946 by our Political Science teacher that "the one way enemies of the USA can defeat and take over the America is to have them spend the Country into BANKRUPTCY"!! This Administration is doing its utmost to make that prediction come true.

Doesn't take a genius to make this statement. Don't worry with the elections over, 2013 will be another banner year.

Paying more for gasoline to go fewer miles. With this economy for the past 4 years is nuts.

If you think Gas expenditures were bad last year, Just wait until Gas goes higher and on top of that when OBAMACARE kicks in, starting this year. Going to cost a family of 4 about $16,000 each year for Less medical care than you already have now. Hope all the Libs Like that, and as for the ones that "Voted for Free Stuff instead of Freedom"' well for the time being they will still get free Medical, But not for very long. Your Day is Coming Too!!!!

The Bakken and the Alberta Oil Sands ain't gonna get cheaper. Especially since the labor is expensive (you gotta pay them for living up in the cold of winter....)
