Gamechanging Natural Gas Tech Gets Green Light

forbes.com -- In April, the U.S. Department of Energy and an international consortium of major oil and gas companies completed an unprecedented two-month proof-of-concept test in the North Slope of Alaska. The experiment was supposed to show that a steady flow of methane molecules could be extracted from a substance known as methane or gas hydrates submerged under the sea floor.

It worked and the world moved one step closer to tapping gas hydrates, the most abundant fossil fuel resource on Earth.

Gas hydrates consist of a crystalline substance in which methane molecules – the primary component of natural gas – are trapped in a lattice of water molecules.

“The energy content of methane in hydrate form is immense, possibly exceeding the combined energy content of all other known fossil fuels,”

The energy content of methane is immense, a major component of natural gas, odorless, colorless, can be a strong green house gas (72x stronger than CO2 gas) and needs to be handled very carefully to prevent the gas from escaping once captured. Methane, CH4, is difficult to transport from its source. Keep the price of this fuel 'reasonable', not high priced! Giving the 'green light' requires DOE monitoring and the Gas and Oil companies responsibility to collect and process methane with great care. Capture methane at land fills and other 'production areas' and use its power close by for 'other' uses. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, has a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!
