EDITORIAL: An Energy Plan For Our Times

Downstream Today -- Leadership: Mitt Romney has unveiled a market-based plan to achieve U.S. energy independence by 2020 and make America an energy superpower. It calls to mind just how stagnant our energy policy has been up until now.

Ever since the Arab oil embargo of 1973, presidential contenders have called for U.S. energy independence -- and none, not one, has come close to achieving it. In part, that's because oil is a fungible commodity that responds to world prices.

All the same, the idea of the U.S. drilling for its own energy, creating 3 million high-paying jobs, putting historic technological innovations to work and ending our reliance on foreign petrotyrants is a desirable objective if the resources really are there.

Fact is, they are, and that's what's different this time.

Right. But posting "ok" is not allowed either and they allow that now without changing the guidelines.

At least Romney has a plan, Obama can't even pass a budget in the Senate for 4 years! Unprecedented in US History. If you care about the future for your kids, NoBama in November.

US energy independence is obtainable if one is talking about North American energy sources. What one has to remember is that the energy argument occurring in the US today is what sources of energy will the US use in the future to obtain energy independence.

"... [B]ecause oil is a fungible commodity that responds to world prices."

That is why 'U.S. energy independence' will never happen. 'U.S. energy independence' is an illusion.

The U.S. domestic oil producers will sell the oil that is drilled from U.S. soil to the highest bidder. A foreign country that is willing to pay more for the oil that is drilled from U.S. soil than the U.S. companies will get the oil. This will happen even if there is not enough U.S. domestic oil to meet the country's demands. So then the U.S. retailers will have to import more oil.

But, the greenies who are opposed to any mining, drilling, farming projects, logging and hydroelectric projects will opposed through their stalling and more stalling, burning businesses and through the court systems to tie up projects on Federal lands for decades into the future.

Really?

You mean drilling more oil in this country for the past 3 years than we have since the 1950s didn't improve our energy independence?

So you're telling me the Republicans' cries of "drill, baby, drill" HAVE TAKEN PLACE (during the Obama Administration) BUT ALL THAT DRILLING ISN'T WORKING?!

Not shocking. Especially since those cries of "drill, baby, drill" were only so the oil and gas sectors could make more money NEVER SO AMERICA COULD ACHIEVE ENERGY INDEPENDENCE! GET REAL!

The easiest way to get the resources developed is to place them on the market. With the Feds controlling the land, it is miles of red tape between today and future energy. In North Dakota, all the drilling is on PRIVATE land - not federal land. We could take a bite out of our #trilliondollardebt by auctioning all the federal lands to the states or people.
