Cheap natural gas gains appeal for oil-field engines

Columbus Dispatch -- The biggest, baddest engines in the world, long chained to diesel fuel, are on the verge of a mass transformation because of cheap natural gas, and oil-field equipment holds particular potential, executives said during a recent summit of heavy fuel users and producers.

“Here’s the first reason that large engines are going (natural) gas,” said Joel Feucht, director of gas-engine strategy for Caterpillar’s energy and power systems division. “Large engines burn the most fuel. I could try to make it harder, but that’s pretty straightforward.”

Oil companies alone use nearly 1.2 billion gallons of diesel fuel a year just for pressure-pumping equipment that supports hydraulic fracturing, said David Hill, vice president of natural-gas economy operations for Encana Corp. Add the diesel used to po

Natural gas will only be cheap until demand rises, then prices will rise.

Developing a dual fuel pickup wouldn't be that big a trick, esp if you sacraficed some cargo space to the cng tank. The problem I see is Carburetor vs fuel injection. I know it could be done using a carburetor. With fuel injection and CAFE stanards along with the EPA may well kill the gasoline CNG dual fuel alterantive.

North America can become energy independent if we pursue increased use of abundant, cheap and clean American natural gas in the form of CNG as our primary alternative to all oil based fuels.

Start with large static engines near the source, then convert heavy duty cross country diesel truck engines to use CNG. This will reduce the price of diesel fuel for use in new high efficiency light trucks. This would put downward pressure on the price of gasoline for use in hew high MPG vehicles, hybrids and the older vehicles that most of us drive.

Unfortunately, demand does usually mean increase in price.

Also the person ordering the polls for the media get to choose the sampling method. Random is almost never done. If you look into the details they are broken down by party. And often weighted toward the Dem party, for any number of reasons.

It will be good for them to use a cheaper fuel. But do the engines last as long as diesels?

A poll on who you plan to vote for would be good here on GB
may not be random etc, but with over 20,000 normally filling in polls would be better than the polls the media does of less than 2,000

It makes sense to convert them, since their power sources is being produced where they are being used.

Good, but will this help lower fuel prices? Cost? Yes. Price at the pump? No.

Finally, the oil companies themselves are realizing the economic savings by switching to natural gas from diesel. It's called eating your own dog food.

I'd like the next weekly poll to be a who are you planning to vote orf as next president? Obama / Romney / Someone else. Looks simple enough to do. Bet the poll results would make national news.

If natural gas is cheaper to use and more efficient then maybe we should be going this route.

Clean burning, reduced cost, a great fuel that we don't have to get from the Arabs. All we have to do is convert our engines to run it. Not a big problem.
