List any gas coupons here that you know of that anybody can easily pick up and where they can be used:

I'll list 2 I use off the web:
1) 7 cents off per gallon at Shoreview Diagnostic Center available on
valpak.com (Saint Paul area)
2) 4 cents off per gallon at freedomvalu.com

Obviously besides being accepted at these stations themselves, I have found that Rainbow, Kicks 66, and PDQ also accept these. Even Holiday has been accepting them lately! Wonder if the threat of having gas buddy legal experts check into Holiday's advertised policy of accepting ALL competitors had anything to do with it? :)

Goldieolds, I think it is printed on the coupon that you have to use it within 30 days. I usually use it the same day, so I don't pay much attention to the expiration date.

Sleepy thanks. I don't mind the duplicate info; it helps me to learn it and keep all the steps straight. I think I've done them all except registering the card. I do try to buy gas on Tuesdays with a 10¢ coupon doubled to 20¢. But I don't usually wait until it's empty enough to take 15 gallons.

Looking at my receipt from the other night, I received two 3¢/gal discounts of 44¢ each (for fuel card and loyalty card) and $2.92 for the coupon, adding up to $3.80. That was on 14.611 gallons, so it looks right.

I usually just fill to cut-off, as my Dad had taught me to do a long time ago. Would it be recommended to top it off to get it up to 15 gallons?

I tried using their touch-screen back when I was trying to transfer the points from my old SA rewards card to the new one, and never got it to work, even with the cashier trying to help me.

Question: does the rewards coupon have to be used the same day it is printed? Or is there a time limit? A lot of times I get to the gas station late, approaching midnight. I wouldn't want to delay the whole process trying to get the touch-screen to work, and risk missing out on the Tuesday doubling.

Thanks to ALL of you who've taken the time to help me get this straight in my thick skull. ;) A special shout-out to Bungee who encouraged me to get started on this route of extra savings.

Goldie: You have most of the pieces of the puzzle. Some tips: The rack hanger card with the new fuel card explains the 3/6/9 cents per gallon discount for using a fuel card, depending on the grade purchased. You should have cashier swipe the SA loyalty rewards card when filling the fuel card, that is necessary to get the 400/500 point on the $40/$50 card fill. Otherwise no credit. Since you don't use much fuel/week, I'd suggest using a 10cent coupon, doubled on tuesday to 20cents per gallon. 20x15=$3.00
+.03 loyalty disc +.03 fuel card disc= .15x3=.45 + .15x3=.45. TOTAL discount for a 15 gal. tuesday fill w/b $3.90. Make sure you have enough $$ on fuel card before using it at pump or you won't get .03 for while sale for using cash after fill.

Discounts should show on the in store receipt, Fill sequence s/b swipe loyalty at pump, pump price should reduce by .03 per gal. Insert and remove fuel card and pump price should go down another .03. If not get it when you go inside with .10 coupon for cash back. You get 10 points per gallon of gas bought also with loyalty card. You cold just add $20 or any amount to the fuel card at any time.

You MUST register the SA rewards card, online or I believe by calling 1-855-468-6972. Registering is how you can set your pin number.

The gas coupons from their in-store kiosk start at .25,(4375 points) which will double to .50 on tuesday. I suggest you use that rather than wait for a .50 coupon.

The SA in store kiosks are a xxxxx (bear) to use. They have a CHEAP touch screen that BEARLY works. You may have to get in-store help to use it, but make sure they do not get your pin!!!

Dir, thank you for taking the time to go into such a detailed explanation. Some of what you wrote I already knew, but not all of it. Philo, thank you, too.

I did use a fuel card, and I did go in and put $50 on it before fueling. Previously I've only put $40 on it at a time -- did that earn 400 points, or doesn't it work that way? I didn't know about putting $50 on. AAMOF, it was after I put the $50 on it that the clerk kept my card, and I was so distracted from trying to keep everything straight, that I didn't even realize that he'd kept it until after I fueled. If I had realized it, I might have tried to argue with him about leaving my keys. But I wasn't gone that long and they were busy, and car keys aren't that easy to duplicate, so I wasn't too worried; my house keys are on a separate key ring. He was young and seemed to be doing everything "by the book." Any time I questioned anything, he answered "its for security."

When I bought the fuel card a few months ago, the clerk on at that station was new and didn't know enough to advise me. I just happened to pick the fuel card, not knowing that it got the extra discount, which I learned later from this forum. I picked it b/c I don't usually buy anything in the convenience store.

I didn't know that they don't give receipts at the pump. Years ago when I used to buy gas at a different (non SA) station, they had a button you could push to request a receipt and then it printed one out at the pump. I think for now it makes more sense for me to make that extra trip into the store, until I get more used to how it all works, and to get the receipt so I can make sure I get all the discounts, etc. That might change when winter comes.

I don't have gas cans and no where to store them, so I guess when it comes time to use my big 50¢ coupon (doubled) I'll just have to forfeit some. But your info did make me realize that when I use it, I should try to have my tank close to empty. Then it takes about 15 gal. However, I normally try not to let it get that empty. It was down to two bars last night and didn't take quite 15 gal. Usually I don't like to let it get down below half, esp in winter. My gas gauge is less reliable below half.

Boy, it's a lot to keep straight and it still gets somewhat confusing at the register, with all the various discounts for different things. But I'm starting to get the hang of it.

The part I haven't done yet is printing out the 50¢ coupon. I didn't know that is done at the in-store kiosk. Nor did I know that if I pay at the pump I'd be able to get the cash back in the store afterward.

I wouldn't have known any of this if it weren't for these forums. I really appreciate how people try to help one another and I am grateful for all the advice I've gotten.

Thanks Buddies!!!

Good point dlr17. I have done that also doing it on a Tuesday. The SA I went to did 10 cents off, not 3. They are the SA's that are more out of the way usually or trying to build up loyal customers and increase the discounts. I got $1.13 off per gallon.

As to the quality of the SA's goldieolds, it depends on the neighborhood and the managers. When I was in a bad part of town the SA was pre-pay only, no restroom, would not take my coupon and the store was not very clean.

You can call and complain to SA customer service, and it my or may not make a difference. It depends on how good the managers manage the employee's. As with all things in life their are good ones and bad ones. I did get one store to take my internet coupons after complaining.

Goldieolds, rather than leaving your keys or credit card at an SA that requires pre-pay, you could buy a $50 (or more, if needed) SA gas card, then use it at the pump like a credit card. Using that, you get an extra 3 cents per gallon discount on the gas price. It's an extra trip into the store to put money on the card, though. If you scan your SA Rewards card at the pump first, you get an extra 3 cents per gallon off, then the gas card to get another 3 cents per gallon discount. Then get your receipt from the pump and bring it inside with your 10 cents (or whatever it is) off per gallon, and they will give you cash back for the coupon discount, doubled if it is a Tuesday.

You can pay with cash or a credit card to put money on the SA gas card. If you put $50 on it, you get 500 points on your SA Rewards card, or 1000 points if you put $100 on it. It works like any gift card, but is only good for fuel purchases at SA. If you put $50 on it, then only buy $40 worth of gas, you still have a $10 balance on your card that you can use next time, but only for fuel purchases. You have to get the SA fuel card, not the in-store purchases card, to get the extra 3 cents off per gallon.

When you accumulate 8750 points on your SA Rewards card, you can use the in-store kiosk to print a 50 cent per gallon gas discount, good for up to 25 gallons. If you use that on a Tuesday, they will double it to give you $1.00 per gallon off. When I get that discount, like I did last night, I prepay for the 25 gallons of gas, then go out and pump it. That way I don't have to have $25 extra on my SA fuel card and go back in to get the coupon discount back in cash. I bring extra gas cans to take full advantage of the 25 gallon limit on the $1.00/gallon discount. Since I know exactly how much gas I am going to buy, I prepay for the 25 gallons and get the discount when I pay, then go out and pump it. They don't print a receipt at the pump when you prepay, so I just write down the number of gallons on my cash register receipt. They don't figure in the 3 cent per gallon SA Rewards discount when you prepay, so you end up getting a little more gas than you prepaid for.

I bought gas at a SA that I'd not been to before. I made a comment about using a "real" coupon this time instead of an internet one. Then I asked him if they accept internet coupons, to see what he'd say. His reply was that it's on a case-by-case basis. Then he appeared to be checking my coupon on his hand-held device before processing it.

It was after 11 pm and he kept my car keys and SA fuel card while I pumped the gas. I didn't like it, but it didn't seem as risky as leaving my credit card, which is what the other SA wanted to do previously. That time I refused, this time I did it. I keep my car keys on a separate keyring from the rest of my keys.

sleepyhollowtoo - The difference is that the coupon that stonesour025 used is a text coupon. The ValPak text coupons are only good for a very limited time span, which is why I don't use them. When manipulating graphic objects (such as the coupons) there is invariably some loss which is why they don't appear as sharp. The original Eagle Lake BP image that I used was 24" wide x 8" high. Naturally when that gets shrunk down you lose some clarity.

One other thing that I remembered concerning the process is that I format the coupons to print in portrait mode. Earlier, depending on the coupon size, I was formatting them to print in landscape mode — until I learned that some were printing them in portrait mode which really shrunk them down. My intent is to make the process as foolproof as possible.

Stonesour: Thanks, that is what I had in mind. I print coupons every month for some folk who are more computer challenged than I am, and they will appreciate it I'm sure!

DI: Thanks for the info about your selection process, I'm sure it's helpful to all of us. I don't follow diesel at all, but I did inquire of a Jetta wagon owner the other day (at the pumps of course) how he liked his car. He said he loved it and was making money on his employer's business gas allowance. He said he just got back from a Chicago round trip. 46 MPG highway. Of course it was a diesel.

Here's a perfectly legible, no questions asked version. Expires 9/15, but it's larger and with less coupons per page.

sleepyhollowtoo - I agree that 30 coupons are probably more than most will use. The number of coupons I wind up putting on a page is primarily determined by the size of the coupon. I scrolled back to April 10 and looked at the featured coupon which was a 20-pak. The difference was that one was a square so fewer fit on a page.

Looking at this (and last month’s) New Hope Shell coupon, I believe that problem is the font they use for “Up to 20 gallons. Not valid with other offers. Expires 8/31/2013.” Even at a larger size, the light gray, italicized font isn’t that easy to read (IMHO).

I do consider legibility when choosing which coupon to use. Several times I’ve had to select another because, after I got the actual image, I discovered that it was of too poor quality to use.

The reason that I selected the New Hope Shell one is because it’s one of the few I’ve seen that’s also good for diesel, which brings up the question “Do stations accept competitor’s coupons for diesel (when diesel is specifically mentioned on the coupon)?”

TornadoRed and other diesel users - Is it worth trying to feature a coupon that also applies to diesel?

The other criteria that I use for selecting which coupon to feature include:

 • Size of the discount - Since many stations & chains limit competitor’s coupons to 10¢/gal. off, I try to get a 10¢/gal. off coupon (and, so far, have always found one).

 • Inclusion of the issuer’s name/logo - Reports mention that stations reject “anonymous” coupons so the coupon must have the station’s name or logo. (This is why I don’t use the Corcoran Crossroads Marketplace / Four Corners Gas & Convenience coupon.)

 • Unrestricted - SA’s published policy specifically states that all criteria must be met so the coupon must not be “Cash only”, require a car wash or other purchase, good only on a certain day, etc.

After those criteria are met, then I consider the following:

 • Longest valid period - I look for the latest expiration date.

 • Highest applicable amount - I look for ones with unlimited or the highest gallon limit.

I’d appreciate comments on my selection process.

And, the reason that I list the other coupons is so you may take advantage of them. If you need a car wash, use one that’s 25¢/gal. off. with a car wash, etc.

DI: Once again, thanks for all the work you do for GB, much appreciated. Just a thought about the featured coupon x 30. I wonder if x 20 wasn't a better size for viewing of the printed coupons? Both myself and the store clerks have to squint to read the details, slows down the line, etc. Plus, I doubt many of us are using 30 coupons in a month. I drive a lot, but rarely would use more than 15 coupons, but I've got a 4cyl with a 17 gallon tank I drive most often. I realize there are 20-30 gallon SUVs, but I bet they wouldn't mind hitting the print button twice to save .10 a gallon. Comments all?

Philo_Gray writes "DI some of your coupons may still be good but the Link my not be good."

Yes, it appears that Valpak.com replaces the image with a ckear dot when it's been superseded.

BTW, the reason that I don't use the Corcoran Crossroads Marketplace / Four Corners Gas & Convenience coupon is it does not include the name of the issuer, which is one reason why stores reject a competitor's coupon.

DI some of your coupons may still be good but the Link my not be good. So it is a smart Idea to save the coupons to your computer to print them when you need them. I did.

This link does not seem to be working

Walleye - One of the constraints is when the various sites update their coupons. ValPak.com tends to do so at the end of them month. In the past, I'd find myself going through the various sites only to get to find that ValPak hadn't been updated yet. I've thought about splitting things up and having multiple posts throughout the month. We'll see.

All Kwik Trips and SAs and all corporate Holiday Stationstores accept competitor’s coupons. Other stations may also accept coupons. YMMV.

• Kwik Trip accept coupons up to 10¢/gal. off.

• Corporate-owned Holiday Stationstores accept coupons up to 10¢/gal. off. Some Holidays may accept expired coupons.

• SA doubles the coupon value on Tuesday. SA’s coupon policy:

[quote]
Double Coupon Tuesdays
Even the competitors

Available at 191 Stations

Fuel Coupons (“Coupons”) must be original, no copied coupons will be accepted. No expired coupons will be accepted. Restrictions on the coupons will be followed, (Example: 5¢ off a gallon with a car wash purchase). Discount cards, similar to “show and save”, will not be honored as a physical coupon is required. Online coupons are accepted as long as they are legitimate coupons from a legitimate competitor, not expired, and we will honor the verbiage on the coupon. Unless otherwise specified on a legitimate competitor’s coupon, one coupon per transaction. We reserve sole discretion to determine legitimacy of a coupon and whether to honor it.

Heads up - SA at Coon Rapids Riverdale area did not accept the 15 cent off Sunday only coupon yesterday.

The clerk told me his manager would not accept coupons printed from the internet. This despite me having a printed page showing the Valpak logo and website where it was printed from that was valid.

I drove a couple miles down the road to another SA in Blaine that happily accepted my coupon. SA Blaine told me that managers have discretion whether to accept a particular coupon, unless they get a corporate e-mail notice telling them they have to accept a particular coupon.

Thanks for the info. I think it is more of a clerck being a jerk then an SA policy. But I could be wrong and it is SA's new policy to be more of a jerk.

Philo_Gray - As goldieolds mentioned, at the bottom of my periodic post (the most recent one is directly below your post), I include the posted SA coupon policy.

I'd suggest that you print it and, when told that SA doesn't accept competitor's coupons, ask why they bothered to use the subheading "Even the competitors" on it.

Philo, if you read back in this forum there was a considerable amount of discussion about SA not taking certain coupons, including a post from an employee who enlightened us further on the issue.

All must be current; they do not accept expired ones as (some?) Holidays do. Some of the most common ones not universally accepted by SA are internet prints/copies. There was also an issue at one time of SA claiming that certain ones were scams, and even though some of us took legit ones in, they were denied. There is variation from station to station and even from employee to employee, as all do not understand the rules the same.

There's a little blurb about the rules at the bottom of DI's monthly coupon postings. You'll get a better idea of the issues if you read back. I think it was discussed most last year.

I usually try to take a coupon inside and show it to the attendant before filling up.

SA told me the other day that they do not take all competitor coupons. But when I asked and pressed the issue they could not tell me which ones. The clerk would have to see it first. I have seen some SA's try and back talk their way out of honoring their policy. Jerk's!

I do pretty much what sleepy... and stone... do, but I only make one trip inside the SA. The SA Rewards points add up quite quickly due to paying with and reloading the SA fuel card. At least ten times during 2012 I redeemed rewards points for a 50-cent per gallon coupon, only on Tuesdays so it was worth $1 off per gallon, of course. I usually purchased 15-25 gallons, saving $15-25 on each fill.

I do basically what Sleepy does. When my Chase card has 5% CB on gas stations, I buy a $500 or so SA fuel card, getting a ton of SA reward points as well. When I fill up, I use a 10-center (doubled for Tuesday) and with the SA rewards, I always get 26-cents off, not including the 5% CB ($25 from that $500 purchase). You also get SA Rewards points everytime you fill, so it's a double-dip.

Sleepy, thanks for the inadvertent tip about the SA FUEL card for 3-5 cent discount; I didn't know about that and will look into it. Do you guesstimate how much to put on it each time? Do you get that discount in addition to the 3¢ for using the rewards card? And do you use SA credit card? I don't think I want another credit card to keep up with, but it might be worth it.

Do others of you use SA credit card? I don't have to buy gas as often as many of you, so it might not be worth it.

" What we have here is a FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE " Us consumers VS SA. VERY many stations have their own rules and guidelines. NO two seem to be alike. I use an SA REWARDS card, a refillable SA FUEL card for 3-5 cent discount, and a 10 cent discount coupon. I fund the fuel card with a credit card which gives me an add'l 5% cash back. So, process at station, unless I know thw particular SA...unless I'm asked via loudspeaker, inside vs out side pay, or unless I see pre-pay only stickers...go inside, fill card, using SA Rewards, inquire about discount policies, go to pump, usually insert SA Rewards for disc., FUEL card to pay, then go inside for cash refund. 2 trips inside, 2 trips through line. NOT efficient for me or SA. I complete fill 1-2 times per week. Pain in posterior. I try to use my fav pay inside after filling SAs,but that is not always possible. SA= S ometimes an A dventure!

The Holiday station at Hamline and Marshall in St. Paul, like many stations in the city, requires pre-pay or credit card payment at most pumps, making it difficult to use coupons (they will refund the savings in cash inside). However, at the 4 or 5 pumps that are in clear view of the service counter, you can use the "Pay Inside" option. I'm not sure how many other stations are set up this way, but it does make coupon use easier.

salgood - FWIW, I believe that SA is a franchised location (one of Kath's).

You might want to contact Kath's main office on Rice in Little Canada as well as SA's Customer Service. Obviously, SA has a lot more on the line if their franchises are pi**ing customers off because I suspect few have noticed the sign near the entrance saying it's a franchise but all have noticed the big SuperAmerica sign.

April 26th, the S.A. at 3592 N Lexington, Shoreview. The "pay inside" button wasn't functioning, I tried several times. I prepaid with my debit card then went inside with my coupon and was told it was too late, I'd already paid. When I pointed out the issue with the pay inside button I was told "there's nothing I can do, you already paid".
New policy or not, I'll never stop at an S.A. again.

SA apparently has a policy now that you can prepay for gas inside or at the pump, then bring the coupon in and they will refund the coupon amount in cash.

Anyone else here ever have a negative experience with trying to redeem coupons at pre pay gas stations?

It is probably my own fault due to lack of experience with this. Today I stopped at a SA in Richfield that I do not usually go to and it turned out to be Pre pay only. I should have just got back in my car and drove off to one of the stations I normally use but instead I went in and gave the clerk some cash to hold on to. I intended the cash ($100) to be a deposit of sorts and I planned to go in after fueling, present my coupons, Walser card and then pay with my credit card like I always do for gas. With it being a Tuesday I would have got .29 cents off per gallon.

I guess I found out the hard way that if you want to do any of that you need to inform the clerk of your intentions in advance. I wound up paying for the gas in cash and not getting any discounts at all.

Sometimes we learn things the hard way, it is very rare that I end up at a pre pay station but now I know what to do if it ever happens again. I wont be going back to that one.

COMPETITOR’S COUPONS

All Kwik Trips and SAs and all corporate Holiday Stationstores accept competitor’s coupons. Other stations may also accept coupons. YMMV.

• Corporate-owned Holiday Stationstores accept coupons up to 10¢/gal. off. Some Holidays may accept expired coupons.

• SA doubles the coupon value on Tuesday. SA’s coupon policy:

Double Coupon Tuesdays
Even the competitors

Available at 194 Stations
