Hybrid and electric cars see record sales in March as gas prices rise, new models arrive

The Washington Post -- Americans are buying record numbers of hybrid and electric cars as gas prices climb and new models arrive in showrooms, giving the vehicles their greatest share yet of the U.S. auto market.

Consumers bought a record 52,000 gas-electric hybrids and all-electric cars in March, up from 34,000 during the same month last year.

The two categories combined made up 3.64 percent of total U.S. sales, their highest monthly market share ever, according to Ward’s AutoInfoBank. The previous high was 3.56 percent in July 2009, when the Cash for Clunkers program encouraged people to trade in old gas guzzlers for more fuel-efficient cars.

And while their share of the market remains small, it’s a big leap from the start of the year, when hybrids and electrics made up 2.38 percent of new car sales.

Its simple folks:
gas goes up = Hybrid & electric sales go up.

That’s why we should develop algae to get gas at about $2 at the pump.
People wont care where it comes from.

Its possible.

The previous article showed actual sales numbers. And they are not very impressive sales numbers for all of the hype that they get. Hope that the prices come down so that more can be sold.

Today it's a record number of hybrid and electric car sales. A couple of days ago, it was super low retention (repeat sales) of hybrids. Strange.

speedys says that they don't have enough range.

I drove my Honda Civic Hybrid from the SF Bay Area to LA and back. OK, I had to fill up a few times, well 4 times, including once just before the trip and once right after the trip. My overall trip mileage was about 50 mpg and usually drive 350 miles between refills. If that's not enough for you, you have my (limited) sympathy.

Of course if he's talking about entirely electric cars, that more persuasive. So, don't get an electric car; get a hybrid.

BTW, my usual month to month gas mileage is in the low to mid 40's. It depends on how you drive, of course. If you like jack-rabbit starts and screeching stops, there won't be much benefit.

I have one and love it, but still cost too much for many to afford, nor would most break even with the fuel savings compared to the higher price.

We traded in a 2008 Grand Cherokee that was getting 15 miles per gallon for a new altima. Now we are saving close to $240.00 per month on gas. The car has been paying for itself. Although it isn't classified as a "Hybrid" fuel ecomony is excellent without having to pay for the hybrid name.

"Panic purchases?" -- Yes, and no.
Personally, I've seriously considered going EV myself....But I won't rush into this decision by any means.
I would like to see the price come down substantially, and more model options, including at least a few mid-size choices.
I would not feel safe in a sub-compact.
