I agree with Nikki, for its impact on its time nothing compares. I thought that was obvious though.

I would have to say that the greatest album of all time has got to be Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band. The things that The Beatles were doing back at that time with music was amazing.

Anybody who has not heard John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things" And "Equinox" should hear them before they leave this earth. These are 2 unbelievable pieces of music. There is another jazz piece by a latin percussionist named Mongo Santamaria. The tune is called "Ole Guajira". It is my absolute favorite piece of music. It has a blockbuster group of musicians. It has been out of print for about 30 years. Anybody that would like it emailed to them, just ask. Include your email address and I will send it. It was on a 33 1/3 LP named "El Bravo"

If "best selling" is any criteria to quality, then I am missing something. Celine Dion's voice hurts, but she is best selling. Elvis and Barbara Streisand and Frank Sinatra were and are totally devoid of any musical talent but they were best selling.

Yes, I'm sure Thriller is by far the best selling album of all time. Yet, I'm sure that I could come up with at least 10 that are "greater" because to me only "Billie Jean" was great on that album.
For instance, Dark Side of the Moon, Surrealistic Pillow & Sgt. Pepper's are great choices.
But, my vote has to go to Revolver by the Beatles. While it was less commercially successful than Sgt. Pepper's or a few other Beatle albums, it was the most innovative and experimental, especially for John's contributions.
Listen to Tomorrow Never Knows, Taxman, And Your Bird Can Sing, I'm Only Sleeping, and Doctor Robert. Those are some very powerful & creative works! It was the true pinnacle of Beatle accomplishment & it makes Sgt. Pepper's sound like an aftershock.

I think "Thriller" is considered the greatest album of all time according to sales.
In the jazz department, I belive John Coltrane has one of the best selling albums of all time.
I personally like Appetite for Destruction by Guns and Roses, as well as "Touch" by saxophonist John Klemmer. He started the smooth jazz movement in 1975. No one was playing the kind of music he did when he released this album.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd.

I'm surprised I haven't seen Guns N Roses' Appetite for Destruction mentioned. Easily the best rock and roll album.

No jazz posted here. "My Favorite Things" John Coltrane, "Time Out" or "Time Further Out" Dave Brubeck Quartet with the amazing Joe Morello on drums

It's hard to argue against What's Going On especially side one. Stevie Wonder had some great albums in the 70's and certainly the Beatles had their share, Sgt. Pepper is my fav Beatles record. Of course there's Michael Jackson's Thriller which by the way, I believe the only album available in all 5 formats when it was released. (Reel to reel - vinyl - 8 track - cassette and cd.)

That's a hard one to answer but if I was on a desert island I think I'd want to have one of my several versions of Handel's "Messiah."
As to which one, I wouldn't want the one that they did a little surgery on to fit on two CDs.

Bad Religion "Suffer" Thank for this info. I must be living in the dark ages. I missed the best album of all time and have never heard of this album, or artist.

While she is NOT a favorite singer of mine (my wife liked her music), Alanis Morrisette's Jagged Little Pill is an album that had almost every song on it hit the charts. And most of them are good songs - even I appreciate them.
My personal favorite of all time? I agree with Dark Side of the Moon. I will also pick another: Without going real obvious, like 'Sgt Pepper'... I will say ZZ Top's Eliminator. (Even though I like their older stuff a bit better.)
