My wife and I have Smart Cars in the Michigan City area.

Are there any others around?

Hi Kitty,
I can't explain the salesman's unwillingness to show you the dipstick. It's yellow and easy to find and use. Turn one nob open the rear engine cover and there's the distinctive yellow dipstick.
As far as why would you want to check the oil, well perhaps that was his way of saying the engine is quite tight and rarely if ever uses needs any oil added. He simply didn't treat you properly. With the synthetic oil we use, the oil changes are quite infrequent and no where near $200.
To respond to your mechanic, perhaps he's not terribly familar with Smart Cars. I'm a devotee of having my cars serviced by the dealership as they're the experts, yes often they charge more per hour but they're often quicker to resolve a problem. (just my opinion)
Hi Bycyklr,
I quess if you're not familiar with driving a rear wheel drive automobile you might get yourself in trouble on ice. I have experience exceptional traction in snow, though steering in snow you have to act like an adult.
I have yet to regret buying the car new in 2008.

I wish they would fit in the bed of my P/U truck so I can use it as a spare!

I know a fellow who had one for a week. He almost killed himself on an icy highway. He says they go into a spin real easy.

I really wanted a Smart Car until I did the research on them. I called my insurance company and the rep told me that the safety rate on the Smart Car is higher than it is for my Cavalier......I was surprised. I went to a dealer to look at them in the showroom. The sales agent got irritable when I asked to see where the dip stick is to check the oil and had stupid questions for me, such as....why would I want to know where that is? Duh! Then to show me, he had to disassemble the back area where the rear window is, it was awkward. I took one for a test drive, didn't like the ride. It felt like I was driving my Cavalier in first gear, no coasting possible, when you take your foot off the gas it slows almost to a stop. The gas tank is of course very small, but I found out it only burns high test gas. So as far as being economical and saving on gas, I think not......you'd just have to fill up twice as often and pay the highest gas rates to get 'er fuelled up. Then I asked my mechanic about the Smart Car. He said they call them the "Not So Smart Cars" at his garage, as an oil change is nearly $200 as the garages need to buy special equipment to take the dirty oil out and replace with clean oil. It seems there is no drain plug. Any unlikely savings on gas would be paid out in oil changes. Also, more is charged for labour for general repairs as they are more difficult to work on. For obvious reasons, I decided not to buy one. Can't see where any savings would be.

'09 Brabus in sw CT. Love it and have 27k miles. There is one in the local dealership that was rolled 5 times and the doors still open. And for that matter, it still drives. Let the naysayers have their way while we spend less money than they do. And no, I do not want to be in my Smart and get hit by a semi. I do not want to be in any car and get hit by a semi

Don't own one, but I have seen a few around. They actually look like they might have a good amount of head room. This tends to be a significant issue for me. Do they have as much headroom as they appear to?

I saw one on the n.w. side of chicago, good for parking on street, but made my prius look like a stretch limo.
