He bought in January 1952, just a few months before I was born. He sold it 19 years later with only 78,000 miles for $125.00. That was just before I got a job, and I was really hoping to get it. My parents didn't have a driveable car for awhile, and we used the truck (lived right down the road from grandparents). After my dad bought a new pickup in 1970, my granddad decided to sell it after getting a few inquiries. I'm sure that if I'd ever told him I wanted it, he would have kept it for me. The only problem was the column shift would get screwed up. The linkage would get out of order and you'd have to raise the hood and set it straight. My plan, if I had it, would have been to change the 3 speed tranny for a 4 speed floor mount. It was the black standard model (no extra windows in the cab). Believe it not, 35 years later, I still miss it.

Then the understated and humble '55 Chevy. You have to appreciate that a car manufacturer changed the body style in all respects for 7+ years EACH year -- no just change the taillight, bodyside trim -- WHOLE new body styles! To be honest, not only am I surprised by how well it's survived nearly 182,000 in less than 7 years, but that's it's survived the way I treat it. Growing up with 4-wheel drives in the desert, I haven't let owning a 4-door sedan slow down my off-roadin', mud-slingin' fun. I've only gouged out the bottom end once and it still gets 30MPG. Future plans include a stainless skid plate, limited-slip differential (maybe lockers) and a 1" lift.
