This Canadian grandma gb very much enjoys our 2008 Cobalt LT. To me, every vehicle has a problem now and again. We were fortunate to pick this little car up within a price that we could afford last year, 2012. The dealer still wants us to trade it up, as they are looking for good used vehicles for their lot. We feel good in our dependable Cobalt to take us where we wish to go, and the petro ... use, my husband summed it up good one day, when saying, "I drink more tea than your car using" "a teacup of gas goes a long way". There's one for the advertising of Chevy Cobalt's to consider.

My son has an '08 Cobalt that he bought almost 3 years ago. It had 10K on it and now has close to 50K. He has had no problems with it whatsoever.

""I think the Cruze is a better car, better mpg, but with a bigger price tag.... ""
The cruze has a better laid out interior. the cobalt interior is cramped. The cruze has a 1.4L turbocharged engine.138 hp - 3,102#s curb weight The Cobalt has a 2.2-liter four-cylinder that initially made 145 horsepower (increased to 155 hp for '09 )2,800#s curb weight the 1.4L turbo is more efficient & allot less weight & almost meets the same HP as the Cobalt.

I bought a 2008 LS Cobalt 4 door, for my daughter, and she has 50,000 miles on it. She had no real problems with it, except she has a tire that loses air...I think she ran over a curb and bent a rim.... She told me she gets around 30 to 32 mpg, but my son's 2010 Focus gets 38-40 mpg....I like the interior of the Focus better than the Cobalt... It has been a good basic car, and if you can find one at a good price, you should....I think the Cruze is a better car, better mpg, but with a bigger price tag....

I am posting a little known recall of the Chevrolet Cobalt which affected my daughter's Cobalt. Chevrolet resolved the problem in 1 hour and 15 minutes (they replaced the power steering motor). At its worst, the problem happened five times on one short trip. It should also be noted that insufficient tire pressure will also cause the electric motor to overheat and cause a thermal shutdown of the power steering motor. It will reset in approximately 20 minutes. There is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) at Chevy dealers on this issue, but no recalls.
Here is the recall which covers all models and years:
DETROIT ? General Motors Co. Said Monday it will recall 1.3 million Chevrolet and Pontiac compact cars sold in the U.S., Canada and Mexico to fix power steering motors that can fail. The recall affects 2005 to 2010 Chevrolet Cobalts, 2007 to 2010 Pontiac G5s, 2005 and 2006 Pontiac Pursuits sold in Canada and 2005 and 2006 Pontiac G4s sold in Mexico.
The automaker said the vehicles are still safe to drive and never lose their steering, but it may be harder to steer them when traveling under 15 mph.
GM spokesman Alan Adler said it will take time for the automaker to get 1.3 million new power steering motors from the supplier, JTEKT Corp., and GM will notify car owners when the parts are available.
Adler said the failures are rare and the cars can still be driven until motors can be replaced by dealers. Drivers will see a warning light and hear a chime if the power steering fails, but they could be surprised when the steering becomes more difficult.
GM told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the recall on Monday. NHTSA began an investigation into 905,000 of the models on Jan. 27 after getting 1,100 complaints that the cars lost their power steering assist. The complaints included 14 crashes and one injury.
The automaker will fix older models first because it usually takes 20,000 to 30,000 miles of driving for the condition to develop, Adler said. GM also will have to repair thousands of vehicles on dealer lots before they can be sold, he said.
"Recalling these vehicles is the right thing to do for our customers' peace of mind," Jamie Hresko, GM's vice president of quality, said in a statement.
Adler said if the power steering assist fails, it usually comes back for a time after the car is shut off and restarted.

Just a small detail, but the Cruze started production last Summer (July 2010). Glad you and your Daughter have enjoyed your Cobalt experience, it really is miraculous that nobody was hurt in that accident!

Please forgive a second posting, but I read where readers were experiencing various electrical problems and were unhappy with their Chevy Cobalt. I found the answer while researching our first purchase. For some reason, Chevrolet's assemply line did not fully insert the fuses and relays in the fuse box under the hood. The solution is to open the fuse box and press down on each and every relay and fuse. This should fix your problem(s). I found the problem on the two we owned and talked with Chevy about it. There was no Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) issued for this problem.

I purchased a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt LT as a graduation present for my daughter. After only 12,000 miles she pulled in front of a one ton pickup hauling a front-end loader traveling at 55 MPH. The result of the collision was miraculous. The Cobalt was thrown 300 feet into the woods and completely totaled. My daughter and two friends survived without a single injury (yes, they had their seat belts on). The insurance adjuster noted the low mileage and extensive damage and issued a check enough for another Cobalt. According to him, the average mileage should have been 54,000 miles, not 12,000, so he added $2,000.00 onto the amount paid to us. You guessed it, our daughter (and Dad too) bought another 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt LT with 32,000 miles on it. It now has 62,000 miles with only one problem -- a recall for the electric power steering motor. It was repaired this past Tuesday and all is well once again. It is a great car. Please note, the Chevrolet Cobalt is no longer manufactured. This year, 2011, it was replaced by the Chevrolet Cruze. It was in production from 2005 to 2010.

Not real happy about having to spend $400 on front brakes because the rotors are rusted out - on a 2009 with 40K miles.

I have a GP as well, great car!
The Cruze has a much better interior finish than the Cobalt did, it gives it a much nicer feel inside and out.

""What hype? Perhaps you are thinking about the Cobalt's replacement, the Cruze? This car has hype - not the Cobalt. ""
Looked at the stats for the new Chevy Cruze. I may need to go take a closer look at them. Seems there are more bells & whistles but it will depend on how it is put together.....Plus it gets over 32MPG....... Beats the 24mpg I am getting in my Grand Prix...But the GP has balls.

Looked at a bunch of cars for my son. When we got to the cobalt....... Not as good as the hype. Cramped inside. VERY Basic. Cheaply made. Battery was in the trunk next to spare..... We took a pass on it.

While I generally like my Cobalt, once again it's electrical gremlins are rearing their ugly heads. When accelerating hard, it just seems to bog down and go nowhere and then after a few seconds, will begin accelerating. Of course, it does not do this and the dealer thinks it's all in my mind.

I rented a Cobalt and really didn't like it too much. It just felt cramped. I bought an Aveo instead because it had a higher roof and just felt better built.

The Cobalt/G5 will not be the only cars on the recall list. The G6, Saturn Ion, Saturn Aura, Chevy Malibu, Chevy HHR and the new Equinox also use this system. Check out the NHTSA sight for complaints on this.
Having had this failure multiple times in an 04 Malibu, starting at 8,500 miles and most recently, at 7,500 miles in my 08 Cobalt, it is quite disconcerting. What GM says about the effort required to steer and the truth are two different things. When you hear that chime you also see "Power Steering Failure" on the Driver Information Center. The steering then becomes next to impossible to turn. If you can make it safely to the side of the road, turn the car off and that then "resets" it until the next inopportune time it happens.

We have a 2008 Chevy Cobalt Coupe. I love it, can zip in and out of the tightest spots and also has plenty of get up! Milage is good 30 mpg. One downfall, Hubby is a bit cramped. He had a lot more headroom and comfort in his Tahoe (which he misses). Haven't had any problems what so ever.

Unless you want to pay for a second catalytic converter....Dual exhaust is not an issue. Slightly bigger pipes covers that.
BTW the SS versions are nice........

I think GM needs to stop building cars in the 1990's and start building cars for 2009 and beyond, Hell they were the First ones to have a Digital Speedometer Camaro "Berlinetta" 1982-3
Where have all the daring engineers at GM been kidnapped and held prisoner at all these years???
US needs to GET MODERN with car designs or just quit getting in the way...

I am very impressed with the warning features built into my Cobalt. I had a flat last night on the interstate and both the DIC and warning lights came on letting me know I was rapidly losing air pressure.
