Could be the next Nolan Ryan; could be the next Kerry Wood; probably will end up somewhere between them.

He is nothing more than a top prospect at this point. He is in the process of reinventing his pitching. Who knows how good he will be.

maddog57,
I totally agree! Carlton, Seaver, Ryan, Gibson, etc. in their prime would run circles around the so called top pitchers of the present era.

I remember there being a lot of talk when Strasburg was in the draft about his pitching style being one where he was likely to have arm problems. A friend of mine is a retired pitcher and pitching coach and he says that the main problem is that pitchers don't run anymore. It used to be pitchers ran every day except the day before they pitched and they day they were scheduled to pitch. Running helped build up their stamina and leg strength. Pitchers today seem to rely too much on their arm and not their body.

While I agree with the pitch count rules for little leaguers being necessary, I don't think Strasburg suffered from overuse as a professional.

The teams completely baby pitchers today and one would think with the advancements in physical training they would be able to throw as much as pitchers 20-30 years ago. But they clearly can not.

With the mention of Carlton and Ryan, they both had huge leg muscles and used their leg strength to be power pitchers. It seems that many of the young pitchers who throw hard during these last couple of decades don't rely as much on leg strength.

I've heard that conclusion too duffer. Too much pitching starting an earlier age. I remember when I was young, a top pitcher would play shortstop or first base to give his arm a rest.

It is a distant memory when Carlton or Ryan used to pitch 20-30 complete games in a season. Now after the 100th pitch, you're out of there.

Strasburg should be OK after this surgery, although he has to be one of the youngest in MLB to have it performed. Tommy John was in his 30's when he had it done, right?

<< Do you guys think that they start throwing junk at too early of an age, or is it just too much heat constantly? >>

Reliable studies have shown that, if thrown correctly, a curve ball is no more taxing on an arm than a fastball or change-up, however most young kids don't throw it properly.

Having spent several years coaching little league and others, I have seen many talented kids fade out because of overuse. They will play 20 games a year with their main team, than play an additional 20 with a traveling, or all-star team. On top of that, they will practice at home with a parent and at organized team practices. Official Little League rules involve pitch counts to try to alleviate some of the problems but there are far more NON-sanctioned "little leagues" than there are sanctioned leagues because of the cost involved and many of those do not have pitch count rules.

From what I'm hearing, the injury came on just that one pitch, not an accumulation of pitches.

However, Steven did have an earlier stint on the DL. I was worried back then that he'd have an injury-riddled career. But this injury is far worse than I expected.

This is an enormous setback for the development of the Nats, who are now working on their 5th basement finish in 6 seasons.

Too much junk at an early age. I hope Strasburg comes back from the surgery and performs at a similar level. He's a good kid and loved following him at SDSU.

The Pirates just drafted 2 (Jameson Taillon and Stetson Allie) 100 MPH High School pitchers in this years draft. I already fear for future arm problems for them too.

Do you guys think that they start throwing junk at too early of an age, or is it just too much heat constantly?

Just when a little excitement comes to D.C. baseball comes this piece of devastating news:

Strasburg has a torn ligament that will probably require Tommy John surgery. Ouch!

I think he has the stuff to have an amazing career. I agree with Notgreen on being for the best not making the All-Star game. He will have plenty in his career and he has a humble attitude it seems for a young guy.

Being a Royals fan, I say Strasburg will feel what it's like to be like Zach Greinke. Great pitcher, but not much run support. He will be a great pitcher, but won't get as many wins as he should cause of no run support. His game against my Royals is a great example. He only gave up one run, but that is all it took to get the loss.

He was very wild in the first inning today and has shown that he is hittable in the last few starts. He's good but not great yet.

A lot on this kid's shoulders, considering the fact that his team sucks right now. That said, he's got the stuff to stick around for a long time. Now, if the management of the Nats can surround him with the goods, he could actually be recognized as the leader of a good team.
