Steinbrenner has been known to run his mouth about a something and then completely reverse himself.

Any thoughts?

Steinbrenner had no intentions of letting Joe manage next season; but didn't have the guts to tell him so; so instead, he has his stooges formulate a contract that he knows will insult Joe, and have him turn it down.

Totally classless!!

Ssmith, you put your finger on it. In a news conference today, Torre said that he found the incentives in the contract "insulting" and that plut the one-year tenure, making him a lame duck, were the deal-breakers. Those points in the contract were non-negotiable from the front office.

And Torre wasn't all that surprised by the offer. He felt that if they really wanted him back, they would've negotioated with him right away, instead of waiting 2 weeks.

You know, if they had just told Torre something like "Thanks for your years of devoted service, but this organization has decided to go in a new direction.", the front office wouldn't have looked as bad. Instead they designed a contract so that it looked like they would talk to him in good faith, when they really wanted to make a change.

This cherade only made them look even more arrogant and gave them worse PR. But, knowing The Boss, I guess we should've expected this.

You never saw this behavior from the Atlanta Braves' treatment of Bobby Cox. He's had less playoff success than Torre and has missed the playoffs the last 2 seasons, and is STILL employed!

Agreed, C.S. I almost would have respected them more if they had just gone out and actually fired him instead of putting on this charade that they put forth their best effort to sign him and offered an incentive-laden contract worth over $5M...

It's really crappy to see him go out this way, but this is a clear case of where this really wasn't about the money. It was a really low blow to have incentives on making the playoffs, etc. It isn't as if this guy is Barry Bonds coming to the Yankees at age 43 or 44 to play for a year to get 3,000 hits. Imagine, they may not have Torre or A-Rod or Mo and bring in Bonds? Yankees lose, thuhhhhhhh, Yankeeeeeeeees....LOOOOOOOOOSE.

The Yankees have handled this all wrong since The Boss opened his mouth during the ALDS. They might as well have fired him. Giving him a one-year contract with a pay cut up front is insulting. Forget the financial aspect. After 12 straight playoff appearances and 4 world titles, this is his reward?

It just shows what an arrogant, spoiled organization the Yanks are, as well at those fans that wanted him out! Just listen to WFAN, and you'll find some idiot callers that are happy he's gone!

Where are they going to find a manager who can not only handle egos, but can handle the press and the Yankee circus atmosphere with that much class and dignity?

I hope this winds up blowing up in their selfish faces!

Joe, in effect, fired them! Good! Hopefully, A-Rod, Mariano, Posada, and others will follow suit!

Ballgame over! Yankees lose! THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YANKEES LOOOOOOOOOOOOSE!!!

The Yankees didn't fire Joe Torre; they just made him an offer he
could (and had to) refuse.

A classless move by the Yankees. Not really unexpected though.

Gotta be tough to leave $5 million on the table, but I guess Torre won't have too much trouble finding another job if he wants one. Hmm, the Mets may need a new manager soon.

The front office didn't want him back and knew he'd reject this offer - that's why they made it. Now they're free to go after whoever they want and not have to get the grief of letting Joe go.

Joe Torre Thursday rejected a one-year offer to continue as manager of the New York Yankees.

Joe Torre took a morning flight to Tampa, Fla., walked into George Steinbrenner's office at Legends Field and listened to the offer. He said he couldn't accept it, shook hands and left the ballpark, the New York Yankees' manager no more.

After all he had accomplished - four World Series titles, 12 straight years in the playoffs, almost certain entry into the Hall of Fame - and after all the indignities, this was one he wasn't going to stand for.

I think the Steinbrenners knew that if they came in with this offer, it would be rejected and they could say 'we did make him an offer'. I don't know if it was the $$ or the fact that they would only offer him one guaranteed year that caused Joe to turn them down but I'm gonna guess it was the year. If the contract had been 2 years, I think there might have been a chance that Joe would still be there. Joe to me has always been class and he was the only reason to ever root for the Yanks for me. I wish Joe luck anywhere he chooses to go or in his retirement if he chooses.

The offer was a crappy way to show Torre out the door. Insulting, and Kudos to Torre for thumbing off the Boss. He is too classy to be treated like crap like this, and shame on the Yankees for treating him so poorly. $5,000,000 is a ton of money, but it is still an insult, as this would actually have been a pay cut and the incentives offered were as if Torre didn't try to make the playoffs and win. Winning in the playoffs, even according to the analysists on Fox tonight, is a crapshoot. Torre didn't manage his pen well, but he also didn't have the ability to go out and pick up guys. Joba and Rocket helped, but I have a feeling the Yankees will have a much different look next year.

I've felt, for the past couple of years, that the Yankees needed a change in leadership. At the same time, I hate to see Torre leave. My instant prognostication: Torre will go back to broadcasting for next season and if the Yankees struggle in 2008, he will be rehired WITH A RAISE in 2009.

This business with Joe Torre is getting kind of bizarre. After two days of much-hyped meetings, owner George Steinbrenner and the New York Yankees still won't say whether they plan to bring back Torre for a 13th season as their manager.

"We hold Joe Torre in the highest regard and, obviously, that's why we're taking the time ... to determine what's best for us as we move forward and whether he's a part of that or not," general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday outside Legends Field, the team's spring training home.

A person familiar with the meetings, speaking on condition of anonymity because the Yankees aren't making details public, said it was possible a decision would be made Thursday or Friday.

Most everyone in this forum is looking at this as a personal assualt on Joe Torre.I think it's a good business move on George's part.I think the club is in a funk with Joe, and really needs a change.I also think 8 million dollars can be better spent on middle relief instead of on a manager that, lets face it, should win with that payroll.Everyone thinks that the Yanks will lose if certain players leave because Joe's gone.Truth is maybe the reason they're afraid of a new manager is because they've become lazy and Joe has allowed them to.How many of the Indians players did we know before this year?? If we give Joe the credit for making the playoffs the last 12 years don't we also have to say he got out managed by a manager that has a bunch of unknowns and 1/2 the payroll Joe has.Don't get me wrong I like Joe Torre and always have but I like the Yanks more and it's time for a change.

Rumor has it that Don feels uncomfortable following in Torre's footsteps. This further enhances Joe's chances of staying.

With giving his son's control of running the team (I think some control), will they (the son's make the decision) or will King George still call the shots on firing Torre?

As blusterly as old George is, he is still an astute business man.The New York Yankies generate more revune than any other team in sports and the fans and players favor Joe.

If he says he will, I honestly belive he will, and they'll make Mattingly their next manager. I think this'll all get done before the World Series, to upstage the Red Sox. The man always has to be #1.

ESPN Radio interviewed Lou Piniella yesterday and asked him if was interested in going to the Yankees if he was asked by Steinbrenner.

Lou's response was the only way I will not be in Chicago managing the Cubs is if I died during the off season (with a chuckle).

I have work to do in Chicago and this will be my last managing job, period!

I think Torre is a great manager for the team, and puts up with an awful lot of pressure from both Yankee fans and the owner. As others have said on here, he doesn't always do the right thing, but almost any manager is questioned by at least some. Torre burns out a pitching staff like no one I've ever seen. But overall he puts up with a lot of different personalities.

If King George is really running the show and decides to do it one thing is sure. Star players will follow Torre out the door. Guye like Rivera, Posada, and perhaps even A-Rod, Rocket and Pettitte...It may be quite a different team next year. Last year in the old stadium will likely not be as good as this past year has been for them...Good for the Sox!

You know, we haven't heard from Torre yet and it's not a given that he wants to be back. And Yankees brass is scheduled to meet next week.

If he's forced to take a pay cut, he likely won't be back.

I'm also hoping that he won't be back so that the franchise will implode, meaning bye-bye A-Rod, Posada, Mariano, and others. It's just what The Boss and the fans richly deserve!

Your are looking at an owner who spends the most money in baseball. He is viewed as arrogant by most and expects a World Series every year.

If Steinbrenner thinks there is a manager that get him to the World Series next year, Joe Torre is as good as gone.

I'm shocked Torre survived after the 2004 debacle. I'm sure three straight division series KO's on top of that doesn't make George happy. Power makes George happy (even more than winning). It might be his last chance to flex his ego and make an imprint on the franchise as The Boss.

Torre should resign before The Boss gives him the heave-ho. He doesn't need this abuse.

I've been bashing Yankee fans to death, but it was nice to see some of them holding up signs in support of Torre.

I think Steinbrenner would fire Joe Torre after 11 seasons as Yankees manager, and if he does, then the Yanks would go to the Playoffs next year under their new manager -- and perhaps go all the way to the World Series. But they have to be on the lookout for Boston, the best team in the AL.

Yes, Torre sure sounded like a man who was ready to face the consequences of 7 straight seasons without a championship. It was a good 12 year run, but it's probably time for a change.

Wonder who the new Yankees skipper will be?
