GULFPORT -- Gas prices are dropping on the Coast, but for one Gulfport station, the pressure to keep up with competition is resulting in a sales loss.

On Wednesday, the price of regular unleaded gas at the Texaco station at the northwest corner of Pass and DeBuys roads was $3.24, just one cent higher than the Shell station at the southeast corner of that intersection.

Rehan Shahid, the general manager of the Texaco station, said the cost to the store is $3.29 but he has to set the price lower because of the nearby competitor. The Texaco station lowers its gas prices every time the Shell station lowers its prices, he said.

“We lose money at that store,” Shahid said.

He said he oversees three gas stations in Gulfport, one in Long Beach and one in Hattiesburg, but the station on the

prices charged by retailers are only a few pennies above what they pay. When prices drop and they still have expensive fuel in the tank, they lose money on the bottom line.
The higher volume stations can do that, b/c they can take advantage of lower wholesale prices. The little guy loses.

Not a good way to run a business, Shell has such high fuel prices. Sell your fuel with some profit to cover the cost of operation, never at a loss. There will be people to buy fuel no matter what the price, even when there is cheaper fuel priced one block away.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible!
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

nothing like a gas war to bring down the price of gas. had a friend who owned a station and he made all his money off repair bays. gas was just a convince for his loyal customers and he took very good care of their vehicles.

Well, I drive as mile to a cent, yeah I know many don't, but I do... & I also see people pay $3.99/Gallon when across the street the same Gas costs $3.23/Gallon! So hey, I'm sure their not going to "lose money selling fuel" for too long! Maybe it's a bad area for business? But it's not just there! Around here, we have towns that have 60 stations in a 15 mile radius & all on 1 street! Like Broadway or a Main St! & We can see a bunch of the cheapest Gas in the State & the Most expensive all along a few 15 minute stretches of Road! Such as Taunton, MA! Where you can find $3.47 right now & $3.89 right now as well! Same gas, same quality, same service, same everything- even location- just PRICE differences! People prefer to pay less, I know I do...

Here in Texas they normally try to out do each other with lower prices. We have Market Basket grocery and Kroger grocery here in Beaumont that are $3.55 right now and will probably go down a few cents more in the next couple of days. Kroger has the gimic to where for every $100 worth of groceries you get .10 off per gallon on your next purchase of gas. I bought mine yesterday for $3.35 at .20 off per gallon. Love the competition.

Miss the good old 'gas wars.' Too much of a 'cartel' around where I live. 50 stations at least, and all at the same price-always.
