High Gas Prices Can't Be Seen as Temporary Anymore

Sometimes the same circumstances can produce different reactions. The first time that gas prices spiked in the past decade, after hurricane Katrina and the big commodities boom up to the 2008-2009 financial crisis, US drivers became paralyzed. Until that point, they had been gorging on gas guzzlers, and they didn't want to stop. Even those that wanted to switch to more fuel efficient vehicles didn't have that many choices (the US wasn't exactly known for its quality fuel-efficient small cars at the time), so most people delayed purchases, complained loudly about gas prices, and hoped that prices would fall.

They eventually did, but only because of the Great Financial Crisis. Once the initial shock passed, oil prices started to climb ...

Yup, people will max out their credit cards to keep driving. Yes, that new, shiny, and more fuel-efficient vehicle will save you money at the pump compared to your older gas guzzler, but with financing, your new vehicle is going to cost cost you more at the end. Now is that worth it?

Gas prices stun economy, not just drivers. $4 is here, and the road is paved to go further

GasBuddies are right, however, if we don't make a change in November, the article will be right and we'll be stuck watching obummer destroy the fossil fuels industry as part of his increased 'flexibility'.

Around where I live it is the opposite. The amount of traffic is up significantly. People are still going to sporting events; running all over the country.

Glad we don't live in Needles CA as reg. there is about $5 a gal. Needles is a very small town just over the border from AZ ; when you drive thru you get much sticker shock with gas prices.
