Brazil plans $38 bln sweetener to revive ethanol sector

"SAO PAULO, Feb 24 (Reuters) – Brazil’s government announced an aggressive plan on Friday to raise flagging ethanol output over the next four years by showering the sector with 65 billion reais ($38 billion) in subsidized credit.

The government will allocate funds via banks to mills and independent growers for the expansion and replanting of older cane whose yields have fallen. Credit will also be available to build up ethanol stockpiles."

---LMAO!! I hate to laugh because it's so sad really. Has anybody in Brazil's government gone to college? A basic economics course would quickly dispel any good feelings over such a poor policy.

Of course the same could be said about our government, but it is the lobbyists and a socialistic administration that is to blame for all the wasteful subsidies.

I'm sure my college economics professors have had many fine examples to teach their students over the last couple years of how NOT to run a government energy policy initiative thanks to our resident socialist politicians.

Brazil's economy has grown by %, but remember US economy is so much larger.

GDP is Larger than the next 3 countries combined... (Germany, Japan, and China). And per capita, Brazil pales compared to USA.

Penny_Pincher says "Brazil's economy has grown a lot faster than ours lately."

According to antiguzzle's economic analysis, their economy should have collapsed decades ago. Yet, they have jumped ahead of Britain in GNP in 2011 to be #6. List of countries by GDP

In Brazil the sugar industry is critical, it is the equivalent to the oil industry in the US. If you travel around in Brazil, all you see are endless fields of sugar plantations, miles and miles of plantings.

The agricultural industry employees huge numbers of people directly and in its support structure. Under no circumstances can Brazil allow the sugar industry to go under. They will do anything and everything possible to insure the continuance of the agricultural industry. Its not something they can gamble with by using some using college economic theory, sugar is their livelihood.

Politcians are the same everywhere. Any industry that needs long term subsidies to survive does not make economic sense.
