I think that the government has shot itself in the foot with the many commemoratives that they now issue. It happened before, but not to the degree that it now has.

I apparently got a Hong Kong dollar in change this week, but didn't recognize it because it was discolored and I thought it was Canadian.

I received a wheatie penny in change the other day. I haven't seen one of those in circulation in a very long time. But I don't pay in cash very often, so maybe that's why.

What year was the last time silver was used in the Canadian two dollar coin?

A dime made in 1873 has cost someone a pretty penny: It sold for $1.6 million at auction.

The rare coin was minted in Carson City, Nev., during a one-day run of dimes.

An anonymous bidder won the pristine coin, said Chris Napolitano, president of Stack's Bowers Galleries, which auctioned it during an American Numismatic Association convention. The final price included a 15 percent buyer's fee.

The 1873-CC "No Arrows" Liberty Seated dime was auctioned Thursday night. It's part of the Battle Born Collection, which contained one of every coin struck in Carson City before the mint there closed in 1893.

All 111 pieces were auctioned off Thursday night, fetching a total of nearly $10 million.

I was at a movie theater once, and there was a blank type one cent planchet on the counter. I asked why it was there, and the clerk said that it had been in a new roll. I asked if I could have it, and she blinked, and offered it to me for a quarter.

I was at the grocery store today, and on top of the Coinstar machine sat 4 pennies the Coinstar apparantly did not accept. All from the Philadelphia mint dated 1917, 1940, 1941, and 1973. There was also a game token, and a flattened penny.

The 1973 didn't do much for me, but I was glad to find those wheat ear pennies!

WR, that is true but they will always be worth more than a person pays for them.

The values are never as high as a rare circulated piece.

I only wish I had purchased more of the 1999-S silver proof set than what I did.

The good news is that my collection will put my two youngest grandchildren through college after I am gone.

The largest expense to a collection these days are the costs of the safety deposit boxes.

The dang artificial "rarities" produced by the mint these days are beyond belief. A half million coins that will never circulate will then always be available.

goldieolds,

The bonding together of two or more dissimilar metals in which to make the planchet. In 1965 a nickel alloy was bonded on each side of a copper core in order to create the planchet replacing the silver ones for the dime and quarter. Some silver was used at first for the half, but that was replaced with the same type used for the lesser coins. This enabled the production of coins that looked the same but became worth less as inflation continued.

I got a 2012 nickel, and a 2012 dime in change yesterday. It looks like there will be A LOT of 2012 pennies, nickels and dimes. Quarter production seems to be curtailed.

ladidaCA,

It is not likely to be a gold coin. You can go to a legitimate dealer and show them the coins. Is there any way that you can photograph and e-mail a picture of the coins? I'll send you a friend request.

how do you find out the value of a coin(s)?

I have a coin that my parents got for their 50th anniversary

it is a gold coin
(not sure if it has been gold covered. I know that pre-1975 coins were silver then, I think)
1974, Liberty/Kennedy head, I think it is a half dollar.
It is mounted on a granite plaque for the 50th anniversary so I can't see the back side.
I also have a large oval frame of various rare coins. What is the best way and best place to find out value and possibly sell them.
I talked to a 'buy gold' place today and with out seeing the coin, they said if it was all gold it would be worth about $1500 (95%) of the weight value)

what do you think?
