Do you rent a vehicle for long distance trips

How many miles do you need to drive to consider a rental?

Do you think its worth it?
(eg: Saving miles on your car value vs cost, etc)

Tempting. I guess it would depend on the price. It would save wear on my car.

But you asked about for long trips. I do this for annual snowboard adventures with some buds. We rent a 7 passenger van and drive it up north for the weekend. That way we can go in one vehicle and fit all our stuff too.

I've rented 100s of cars. I like rentals. I get to drive all these very cool cars. Admittedly most of the time its a Focus or Malibu, but those are fun cars and cool to drive. They are typically well equipped with all the toys.

Plus, half the time I get involuntarily upgraded to something else - when they run out of midsizers. Usually get put in an SUV or a big luxury car.

Depends on where I'm going and who I'm taking. Generally, no.

Only if we are flying somewhere like we did last weekend when we went to Texas and did not have enough time to drive there.

No. I postponed body repair for a trip to Florida because I didn't want to get a dog of a rental car. While my car was in the shop, my rental didn't have XM radio activated. Bummer!

I enjoy driving too much to sit in a rent-a-car, most boring things on earth.

My 41 yr old sports car does travel duty, gets 30+ highway MPG (and yes it's still that reliable)

The gas hog SUV stays home

Decided to rent again this year, its expensive but I rather not put on so many miles and then having the peace of mind that I am not responsible for any issues the car might have + the roadside assistance.

Not to mention the car I am renting will have EPA 32mpg average where my car will average 19-23mpg

I see no reason to unless your car is a junker.

Yes, I've rented from Hertz for 1900 mile roundtrips to Florida. I'd never rent from those pricks at Enterprise, though.

I've done it a few times when I was living in Wisconsin and owned a beater. As of the last 7 years, I've either driven my own car or flown.

We've rented full-size cars for trips to Florida from Ohio. Much cheaper than airfare if you're moving 4 or 5 people. I recomend the Ford Taurus or Dodge Charger.

Just set up a rental car for a road trip at the end of next month. Went with 2 weeks (since it was almost the same price as taking it for 12 days) and plan on putting about 2,200-2,500 miles on it. $600 well spent, I think.

I generally go with Hertz and it sometimes costs a little more but it is usually worth it and there have been very few problems with superior customer service.

Good Morning Dennis783. You said, "I don't see where there would be a savings." As my earlier post regarding my late brother's unreliable automobiles states, the savings was just arriving to a destination without a breakdown. A car can be fine for local driving and totally unreliable for interstate travel.

Off topic, he would love your Pontiac emblem. He drove those huge Pontiac Bonneville convertibles with the 389 cubic inch engines. I still remember the Indian Chief indicator for the high beams. Great memories :-) .

I don't see where there would be savings, you already paid for your car why not use it. Only way I would consider it is if I needed a bigger vehicle on the trip.
