Now that Ford and GM are putting out some really nice and reliable cars/trucks, would you switch back to USA made?

I have a Mercury, Chevrolet, Nissan and a VW. So I guess I am half and half.

YES!!!PLAN TO TRADE/SELL the prius THIS fall(and buy the new Ford hybrid), the wive keeps giving me the Toy Prius to drive, so I can check out posible problems, latest break lock ups in wet weather! The Prius is clearly the least favorite to drive and the Ford Escape hybrid the desired ride in our family!

I hate the quality of my wifes crappy prius BUT.. AA2009 it does get 40-45. I have had to use my wifes prius to track problems she finds, and calc. mpg's are right in there at 41-44 for ours. The gas milage is the ONLY thing I like about it. Our Ford Escape Hybrid is a much more versatile car with far better quality and ave. mpg is 32.5, for a larger, SUV is admerable. Looking foward to Ford's new hybrids getting 47 mpg, this fall!

Hi Nicitok. Thank you for the terminology explanation. I enjoy learning things. Yes, we too in the US called the component in the distributor a rotor. I suppose I should have called it disk (or disc) brake rotors. I wasn't thinking about the distributor as it was used so many years ago. Do you still call a car trunk a boot?

You're right, some vehicles from the past have been a "money pit". I owned several myself to include one with three major engine failures in 100,000 miles.

I do agree that the newer cars are "really nice and reliable".

Yes I know there are other foreign cars made in the US, I did not feel an entire list was necessary. As for your rotor ( brake discs to us Brits, rotors spin inside the distributor cap )problem, I had a similar problem with a car, forgot which one . I had a Ford Explorer, it cost a lot of dollars to keep on the road. Its replacement, a Dodge Durango was far worse! Continual money pit, finally when the power steering went I gave it to the Army Veterans.

Hello Nicitok. You made an interesting statement, "Although Ford/GM parts may be cheaper, I find them less reliable." Excluding the manufacture portion of your post temporarily, I have over the past 40+ years found that many part failures are the result of poor design implementation (e.g. placing an ECU electronic component in a spot which is too hot to save $4.00 in wiring per vehicle or placing a distributor near the right front wheel where it gets wet and the vehicle quits running). Regarding the manufacture, and it is not just Ford or GM, their fault lies in continuing with the design flaw after it has been identified and documented year after year. I just replaced rotors on a 2005 Pontiac Vibe (e.g. a Toyota Matrix). I had to use a 2.5 pound hammer to break the rotors lose from the hubs even using Liquid Wrench and WD-40. The aftermarket rotors had two holes drilled in the rotors and threaded for use with a puller. Why didn't Toyota or GM do that to start with or after they found the problem? It may just boil down to cost as it cost more expensive to bore a hole and tap it.

There is always the user issue of doing something no Engineer ever thought someone would do. I ran into this a lot as a Computer Engineer. I remember an individual who had a piece of computer equipment and kept turning it off and on until the electrolitic capacitor in the power supply exploded and blew a whole in the cover. I asked the question, "Why?" He was "bored".

Oh, to add some to your list of American made there is BMW in SC, Hundai in South Carolina, Honda in Murrysville OH. Yes, it is a blurr.

What IS American ( as in Made in USA ) now, I agree with you, rather a grey area. Toyota and Honda are made here, although American made, they are not a domestic brand. I do not even regard Chrysler American anymore as Fiat have more than a half share in the Dodge owners. Like you I do my own car repairs. Although Ford/GM parts may be cheaper, I find them less reliable.

Hello Nictok. I just purchased a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic LT2 and previously owned a 2008 Chevrolet Equinox LS.

What is a "USA brand"? The Chevrolet Sonic is 20% Korean to include tires and engine & 47% American parts and is made in Michigan. The Equinox had a 3.4L six cylinder Chinese engine, a 5-speed Japanese automatic transmission made by Suzuki and it was assembled in Canada. Yes both are branded "USA", but in reality contain parts and subassemblies from the global market. I've owned foreign cars in the past, but I also have had excellent service from Ford, Chevrolet & Dodge. I admit, I do most of my own maintenance so generally speaking, I've been happy with both foreign and domestic vehicles over the years. My one negative comment would be that foreign car parts prices are generally much higher in price than their USA counterparts, but neither are inexpensive anymore.
