This topic is SOLELY for providing an alert that Speedway SuperAmerica (SSA) has uniformly increased the price at their Twin Cities corporate locations — in other words, SA has spiked and virtually all other Twin Cities stations will increase their price over the next 24-36 hours.

Please post follow-up discussion as well as reports of individual station increases to Gas going up.

Guesses, predications, and speculation about what will happen to gasoline prices should be posted to either that topic or Gasoline price speculation.

Please keep this for posting an increase in price only. There are many other topics to discuss all other issues. Thank you.

Our gas price for MN are now Higher then CA. What the....? Prices are up almost as much as when those 2 CA refineries when off line. We have not been above CA prices in over 2 years and that was only for a day or two.

Although there was another price increase today, FOR THE LOVE OF PEAT MOSS, TAKE OTHER DISCUSSIONS OUT OF THIS TOPIC!!!

Every post made brings this topic to the top of the list, even if there is not a price increase in effect. There are plenty of other topics to discuss a wide range of issues.

nru, while it is true that some Republicans are advocates for big business, the typical Republican favors a free-market approach by government and not a pro-business approach.

During his campaign, Mitt Romney seemed to be mainly free-market, though the leftwing media tried to portray him as a tool of big business. At the same time the MSM ignored Obama's ties to big business, especially to the Wall Street financial interests.

If I feel the urge, I'll respond to the Romney/corporate interests stuff in the 'National Political Discussion' thread.

I figured SA was spiking to (at least) $4.399/gal when I saw a couple of SA locations had dropped from $4.299/gal last evening to $4.199/gal and $4.219/gal this morning. :-(

I guess I thought that Romney was a friend of big corporate interest and would be happy when they made large profits. Must be wrong according to my conservative friends. In other words he lied about his standings on corporations - oh well, guess the conservatives have had it both ways for a long time

nru LOL - that was the excuses the other guy said in the last election. "It would have been even worse with out me". What I want to see is it get better.

This is like the captain of the Titanic saying things would be worse with out me.

Actually nru, according to many here, Bush and recession are linked. Recession and lower gas prices are linked. Therefore, gas would have been lower because of the recession (though many people would have a harder time paying for gas without a job in a recession)

Then why did YOU post the following on 5/13 at 5:19pm:

"nru - I'd recommend filling up at those prices (as I did last night). I estimate the minimum selling price should be increasing to about $3.82/gal."

That sure looks like follow-up discussion to me, Mr Hypocrite.

DD: I'm not in the industry, only a consumer, and not aware of the industry pricing model/strategy. Maybe someone can enlighten me, as inquiring minds would like to know. MY question is still about the remaining 2000 gal purchased at $3.50, now retailed at $3.99? My "profit" on that is now roughly $1000 additional, while the add'l cost to me is the cost of changing my sign and pump prices, no? I realize there are add'l costs to be considered, but this is just the simplified scenario you posed.

From what I have seen on this website it looks like they are all going up. I will see on my home what they are. For sure tomorrow I am sure they will be up. I saw one gas station, an independent, this morning that we up to $3.99.

Think about it for a minute and you should see that it's not crazy at all. Let's role play for a minute, and I admit this is simplistic but it gets the point across (I hope).

You are Mr. Gas Station Owner. You have 10,000 gallons of regular unleaded gasoline (U87E10) in your storage tanks (I have no idea if this is an accurate reflection of gas station storage capacity or not), and you paid $3.50/gallon delivered for that gasoline. You're currently selling regular unleaded gas (U87E10) for $3.659/gal, so you're making 15 cents per gallon of U87E10 sold. That's decent, I'd say.

It's Wednesday morning and you know that you'll need 8,000 gallons of U87E10 to refill your storage tanks by the end of the day, so you go to order more from your supplier and have it delivered on Thursday morning. You've made an average of 15¢/gal profit on those 8,000 gallons ($29,592 in gross sales, with $1200 of that as gross profit), so you think you're sitting pretty. But your supplier tells you that it's going to cost you $3.85/gallon delivered for that 8,000 gallon order. You're shellshocked at the bill - $30,800. Do you:

A) Keep your price at $3.659/gallon?
B) Increase your price to $3.859/gallon?
C) Increase your price to $3.999/gallon?

If you answered A or B, you aren't going to be a business owner very long.

DD: Are you really saying $3.70 gas in the ground, gas /product in the tank, bought/paid/ delivered at $3.70 is being SOLD at it's REPLACEMENT COST? THAT'S a crazy, and a CRAZY GOUGE? That's LIFO, NOT FIFO pricing. What if delivered goes to $4.29 tomorrow? Is the station still losing money on the $3.70 still in it's tank? I don't think so.

Philo - You are misinterpreting DI's daily pricing post. The spike threshold is our best guess at how many cents per gallon of margin (profit) gas stations are currently getting on sales of gasoline. When that number goes negative, that means there's a high likelihood that gas stations are selling either at a loss or for no profit. The -.16¢/gal spike threshold meant stations that didn't change their prices would be selling gasoline for a huge loss. It doesn't matter if they received a shipment of gasoline today or not, it's the replacement cost in play here. Yes, a station may have paid $3.699/gallon for the gasoline in their tanks this morning, but it's going to cost them a minimum of about $4.03/gal to replace it, so selling gasoline today for $3.899/gal means they are "losing" 14 cents per gallon, and I don't know of any business that would deliberately lose money like that.

I hope this helps!

I sure am glad I read these threads. The speculative warning was there yesterday evening. The hike went off between 9 & 10 Am, but my warning from GasBuddy doesn't show until 11:23 AM. Maybe the gurus should be checking in with us.

Guess my $4.09 prediction was optimistic they wouldn't add their 10¢ margin on top of the 20¢ it went up yesterday.

Oh well, topping off for $3.829 should get me to mid-next week.

Yes, it does, DriverDave. That brings today's retail price to more than 71 cents per gallon higher than it was a month ago in the Twin Cities area, while the price of crude oil had remained fairly stable and the U.S. average has increased only 8 cents per gallon in the last month. Someone is making some killer profits at this price.

Yep. A $3.79 SuperGouge is on in Roseville and Falcon Heights. Other stations still holding steady so far. Falcon Heights BP still at $3.56, Dave's still at $3.69 and the ProStop on Cleveland between 94 and University in St Paul still at $3.51.

So, another SA MoneyGrab© posted at stations after 9:30am instead of 9am, which is usually the case (This is one of the days I go into work later than "normal", but only until the end of the month). I wonder if this is a new trend to catch most commuters with their tanks low, if you will, or just an aberration? The SA's I drove by this morning were still at their pre-spike prices, even after 9am.

There are only 2 to 3 gasoline wholesalers in all of the Twin Cities area - most of the "majors" left years ago, as we are on the edge of the "frontier" (read: low demand). Therefore there is little competition.

Like clockwork, these few wholesalers raise prices on Tuesdays & Thursdays, more recently a half day earlier (late Mondays & Wednesdays). Always fill up before then. This has been going on for 10 years. Yes, SA (used to be Marathon refinery, somebody else bought it) is one of the local wholesalers & usually the first to change price.

Not much we can do about it except move to where there is more competition (St. Louis, Chicago, etc.)
