Fletcher said Saturday Coach Yeo will be back next season: "We have to have some semblance of continuity." IMHO, there aren't too many "good" coaches available this off-season, and Lindy Ruff is the only one that comes to mind right now.
The Wild have three needs, from what I've seen during the lockout-shortened season and 5 game playoff appearance. They need scoring depth, they need at least one or two more solid, or at least decent, defensemen, and they need to decide on their goaltending future.
I will have to spend a few minutes on CapGeek to learn more about UFA's and our own FA's this off-season. The Wild have $9 mil in cap space, according to many sources, to play with right now, and a list of players to decide what to do about - PMB, Backstrom, Cullen, and Brett Clark are all UFA's; Clutterbuck, Falk, Spurgeon, Scandella (and a big bunch of AHL guys) are RFA's. Heater's $7.5 mil has to be on Fletcher's radar for an amnesty buy-out.
This is just me speculating.
- Backstrom could return, but I can't see the Wild spending more than $4 mil max per season on a 36-year old goalie. Clutterbuck isn't worth more than $1 mil per season. Cullen... probably $2 mil per season - Remember, he typically has had a great first half of the season while a member of the Wild and then tails off dramatically after the All-Star break. But he is that good veteran leader that the team needs to tutor guys like Zucker. - That being said, the only goalie I think is worth pursuing is Mike Smith, and he'll be getting a decent raise over the $2 mil salary he's gotten the past 4 seasons. Forwards are more of a mixed bag - do they look for a guy at or nearing the end of his prime but still has some gas in the tank, or do they look for in-their-prime or younger players with upside but are more of a risk? Heck, any player is a risk, look at Pascal Dupois. He's 34, just had a 20 goal season in only 48 games, but if you take him off the top line in Pittsburgh, how good is he really? As for defense, I think the Wild need to go after a guy like Grant Clitsome or Ron Hainsey from Winnipeg or snipe a guy like Mark Fistric from Edmonton (and probably drive those mouth-breathing Oiler fans batty in the process). Decent d-men this season, a positive +/- rating, and can score goals more than once per biennium.
Not quite as interesting as last off-season [heh.... ;-) ], but this one will not lack interest for Wild fans.

Erase the "blackboard" and start fresh next year! New Coach with some credentials like Jock La Meire(sp?) had new goalie who does not cop out when you really need him, a New Captain that can get some points in the playoffs PMB gone but keep Cullen who played well. The team did accomplish the goal set last July to make the playoffs and win one game.

A couple of soft/fluke goals by Chicago last night in the first 25 minutes of the game and the fork was already stuck into the Wild's season. Not a great game last night, and it honestly didn't look much better than their effort in Game 4. Hards got pulled in the 2nd period after giving up 3 goals, Kuemper was decent in relief but they were done by then anyway.
Backstrom had been playing with a sports hernia. That answers the question of why he just went into the tank the last few weeks. Rumors around Koivu playing hurt as well, and that really grates me the wrong way.
Still, I can't complain about the team making playoffs. While there are questions to be answered and contracts & cap management, the future is bright. I agree - PMB is gone. Backstrom may be gone also. Heater could be amnestied. Clutterbuck may be back, but he's not going to get a lot of money if he is. They need to shore up their D corps and get some guys who can shoot the damn puck and not try to play keep-away with it. You can't score if you don't take a shot!!! I think Yeo is back next season to show what he can, or cannot, do with this team given a full training camp and time he didn't have this season. If the team is floundering around New Year's, I think the trigger is pulled and a new coach brought in. But I could be totally wrong and he could be fired next week, who knows. :-)

Thanks, WILD for a better season. Too bad you got #1 Chicago in the playoffs.
I'm looking forward to next season. IMHO Pierre Marc Bouchard will not be back. He tried after his injuries, but couldn't quite cut it.

Harding to start in goal for the Wild tonight. My gut says he's going to have a really good game tonight - No better way to make Chicago pay for running him over in Game 4 than stone cold stopping them in Game 5. The Wild also gotta get their PP going - Going 0-fer in the series is bad. Really bad. A couple of PP goals between Games 1 and 4 would have this series looking a lot different, IMHO.
Tonight's game = Gut check time. Play well and lose? You can hold your head high. Play like a sack of crap and lose? Fans have no patience for that and will turn on anyone turning in that kind of performance in a hurry. That's not being a fair-weather fan, by the way, that's expecting players who are paid 6-figures (or more) to play hockey to perform like they are getting 6-figures (or more) for playing hockey.

My theory was correct game 4 to be a blow out like game 2 but I had picked the wrong team! Chicago won 3-0 same deficit as game 2 which was 5-2 so Thursdays game will be another OT and hope Wild win that one but Chicago will probably win as they are better!!

Losing Harding on a play where Toews should have received a penalty for goalie interference was not a good.

I agree with Dave that the Wild looked really good yesterday. I have to admit that I was skeptical about the OT because Chicago was really carrying the play to the Wild toward the end of regulation, but to the Wild's credit they came out flying in the OT. Fun game!!

Great game yesterday! They looked better than they did in Game 1, and were an inch away in Game 1 from now being up in the series 2-1 instead of down 2-1. The only lapse was right before Chicago tied it up in the 3rd, you could just see that goal coming.

and a "must" win they did!!!!! 3-2 in OT at 2 min 15 secs #16 the rookie got it. Very exciting game and the fans were in it from the drop of the puck in the 1st. Chi scored first and the feeling of here we go again come over the crowd, but that goal spurred the Wild and they tied it 1-1 then went a head 2-1 until a few minutes left in 3rd when Chi tied game Wild out shot Hawks 39 to 19 and checked them all over the rink very physicial game.

Zim - Oh yeah, a hot goalie can win a Cup, like last year as you mentioned. That happened to the Wild in the 2003 playoffs, as well. After their improbable series wins against Vancouver and Colorado, they couldn't get anything past Anaheim's J.S. Giguere in the Western Conference Finals, and Anaheim wound up winning the Cup that year.
I agree with the general sentiment, Harding definitely played well enough to get the win. The whole team did, for the most part, but the Hawks found a way to win it in the first OT, so on to Game 2 on Thursday evening.

They did play well enough to win, just couldn't get a 2nd goal past Crawford.
Zucker looked like our best skater last night. Umm, first line didn't really have an impact.
Also, the penalty call on Parise that led to the Hawks first goal was marginal, as he looked to be checked into the goalie, oh well.

Wild played an excellent game tonite but lost with 3 min to play in first OT! Ouch! They played good enough to win! Backstrom hurt in warm ups and not able to play so Harding played an exceptional game and should have won! (Before the game this brought back memories of the Vikings playoff game last fall when the backup quarterback started and Viks lost and he played badly. but Harding played above and beyond what is expected of him especially when he thought he was going to watch the game!

So Wild will be on NBCSN tonight and Friday, with Sunday's game on NBC.
Wonder if FSN+ will pick the feed up, or is it strictly on the NBC network stations?
Oh surprised that the games (1,2,4) will be on FSN as well. Guess the Twins are bumped to the FSN+

"If they can stick to their game and execute well, there's no reason they can't beat the Hawks and move on to the Second Round."
There are quite a few reasons, but it's hockey and a hot goalie can turn all those reasons upside down, ala the Kings last year.

Remember - The pressure is on the Hawks, not the Wild, as they were the "best team" in the regular season and won the President's Trophy as the team with the most regular season points. :-)
The Wild have shown that they can hang with the Hawks. If they can stick to their game and execute well, there's no reason they can't beat the Hawks and move on to the Second Round.

It is a facade. I am still pro Wild. I am trying to use reverse psychology on the boys in case they read this post and to reduce the sadness when the inevitable happens. If they would have beaten Edmonton as expected they would have finished 6 th seed and would be playing vancouver now and we all know that would have been much better!

Well that was unexpected, now they get to be swept away by the Black Hawks.
Maybe they can steal a game if Backstrom stands on his head.
