are we going to find other sources of making our cars run and means of transportation? is this planet going to discover new ways of transportation in the 21st century or are we going to remain dependent on OIL.

The oil companies will let you know. Until then, mind your own business and keep shelling out big bucks for gasoline.

As the global supply of "cheap" crude decreases, fuel prices will go up until most people can not longer afford gasoline or diesel fuel. As this happens, people will be switching to things that are then cheaper.

What is your definition of forever? Our lifetime most likely yes. They are so many reasonable alternatives out there that dependency on Oil will subside. Oil is used to make other products other than fuels. We should probably save what we have left for these other products and begin a transformation to Natural Gas, Electric, Compressed air, fuel cells, etc.

In the next (lets be generous) 40 years of my life I'd have to say yes. Unfortunate, but given the nature of naysayers, stuck-in-the-muds, and those who profit from them, very little is really going to happen until the very bottom of the oil barrel is clearly visible.

When it becomes cost effective to switch to an alternate fuel source, people will. However it is not currently a wise decision from a personal standpoint.

Looks like it will be gas til the end of this century. You have to imagine that the oil companies will do all they can to sell us gas as long as they can. After all, they have a ton of money tied up in infrastructure. e.g., drilling, shipping, refineries, gas stations......

Since the supply of oil is finite and will not be available indefinately, permanent dependency is not an available option.

I like to think I will use oil forever, but the reason why prices are going up is because there is just not as much oil in the ground as there once was. This is a big reason why we are seeing such a move toward renewable energy. You had better believe though that I will be using gas as long as it is feasible!

Welcome to Gas Buddy!

When I read the question it immediately brought to mind an episode of the Simpsons. I noticed they have their 500 episode coming up and also realized that many of life's questions can be answered in an episode of the Simpsons.

The show that came to mind was when Flanders who is left handed, opened a left handed store in the Springfield Mall. The place was headed straight to failure before Homer got all the lefties in town to come buy products from Flanders Store. Now I know your saying "what the hell does that have to do with oil and more importantly my question?"

Well here's the link. People have finite resources (money). They will spend it as wisely as possible and invest it as wisely as possible. Currently alternatives to an oil based transportation system are limited and alternatives are expensive. Look at the price of electric cars and the lack of a good infrastructure to recharge vehicles. Also remember that we burn a lot of fossil fuel to make the electricity. So the moral is, as long as people vote on alternative energy sources with their wallets the likelyhood of changing to a non oil based transportation system is not very good. A lot of people will rave about the benifits of 100% ethanol, or CNG vehicles, or hydrogen power, etc. but the reality of those alternatives is that until someone is willing to invest heavily in the technology, and more importantly the refueling infrastructure to support those fuels (which will cost billions of dollars and ultimately passed on to the consumer) we will not see a major shift away from oil.

Basically most folks don't have a problem with an oil based transportation system. From all the posts here, reports in the press, and the overall condition of the US economy the problem they have is with the price of the system. But don't get confused by all the talk, the price of the alternatives currently are as much and in most cases more than what we pay today which is the primary reason we have not or will not see a shift in the near term.
