No, but I have filled up without my wallet. It was awkward, gave them my case of 8 track tapes to hold until I returned with cash.

Never on purpose! Twice, both were fully excused due to situations beyond my control. Never intentional or malicious! Once the Lightning in a BAD Thunderstorm knocked out power WHILE I WAS PUMPING & they couldn't accept payment, which I did NOT understand as I was paying $18 in Cash because my discount brought the price down so my full tank was $18 (at one point, I couldn't see the final price for the last 5 seconds of pumping, the digital display turned off with the power) but they couldn't bill me because they said "We could be taking too much $ from you or too little without the computer screen telling us, so we can't accept payment, you're all set". Then, a few years ago, I & a GB Friend had a freezing cold & nervous experience with a time limit to get to a quick but important meeting that had to be attended but was across the state of VT (we were on the North West side of Vermont by VT-7, needed to be in Central / South East! Ugh!)! We ran into a situation, which seemed to just happen really FAST & at a really poor choice of time! We had $ & 3/4 tank- At 1:45AM! Then at 4:30AM, with out ever exiting the car, we had NO Cash anywhere (Hours prior, we had enough cash for 3 or 4 fill ups & did not make any stops). The temp was -20F & we had Premium 93 in the Gas tank, which HELPED, as we used it for the trip & the Mileage improvement results were excellent! But at 4:30AM we noticed that we had NO Gas & the cash was lost, temperature was -20F in Northern Vermont, Winter time & COLD! We had NO MOTEL for safe shelter as my Cash had vanished, so check in may b a potential issue! His cell phone had 0 service, my Verizon iPhone4s thankfully picks up other towers cuz I have unlimited free roaming enabled & satellite calls ONLY if no /\,A,D,O,1x,3G,4G etc. is to be found. But my phone was useless on this long horizontal state road! No Gas stations to update & Nobody to call at about 4:45am! So I found the cheapest Gas station! & Our homes were 320 Miles away! We were in Heavy Snow, Very Expensive Gas at most places. Had A quick Medical Appointment we needed to get to in another part of the state by 12pm, it was 5:15 am. The Gas pump wouldn't take my credit card in a normal fashion, but it wasn't saying declined either.. & to this day I can not figure out what happened to my $250 emergency Gas $ !! So I swiped my card the 2nd time & I knew I couldn't go inside because it said 'Pumps Open 24/7, if paying Cash while conv. store closed, drop cash in money slot under pump, Inside hours 5:30am - 10pm, Please Pump BEFORE Paying, we can not preset for exact cash amount'. Store door was locked & it felt like glass & ice was being thrown at me & my face! The wind was so high & the windchill with 40MPH winds in -20F air must have been below -40F easily! I couldn't wait I was in pain & the car was dying any second! I waited until 5:48 & that was 18 Minutes after Opening & nobody was there STILL! A man next to me from the Town was filling up his truck &(which is a Town in VT I visit many times every Winter for Skiing) he said "Hey I recognize U from the Mountain, you're ****", I said "Yes I am & guess what, I'm out of Gas, 320 Miles from home with a friend, my credit card is acting very strange & it's freezing & I don't have the motel room or the condo this weekend!" & He was so nice & offered $ but HIS CREDIT CARD DID THE SAME THING MINE DID!!! the "######" so he said "You know what, I'll just let Chuck know that a friend of mine was here with me getting Gas & neither of our cards worked, he will be fine with it, he's the cheapest in the whole county & so he does about 10x the business of anyone else all day & night, he's a great guy & won't mind a bit, I'll pay for you later today then just send him an envelope with some cash or a check or whatever works for ya when you get back home & settle in or the next time you come up soon, the mountain Opens in just 8 days!". I felt bad but then he said "Don't you worry, I can't pay for my Gas right now either, look, the machines are all having an issue"! We tried all 8 pumps & during the attempts another woman happened to say to us "Are you guys having payment problems as well?". We said "Yes". She had tried 3 different cards, so it was not out fault! So my Ski buddy from VT helped me for the day, he was coming back to town in a couple hours. I was able to fill our EMPTY car with Premium 91 with NO ETHANOL, it increased our Miles Per Full Tank by just Under 70 MILES EXTRA!!! We were thrilled! & When I arrived home 2 days later because we found a beautiful place with a lot of Stations, over 30 (between 5-8 towns) & about 14 of them were not in the MSL on GB! So my worldwide wireless Laptop was very useful when my iPhone wasn't fast enough in the mountain spots to load the webpages on GB fast enough to update prices at the same time! So we stayed an extra day once I found a bank & had my Card fixed & then I arrived home & sent Chuck a money order with $15 on it to thank him! He didn't want me to send the $ because he was appreciative of my honesty but I absolutely insisted! I've seen him & gone to his Gas Station 320 Miles away at least 8 times since this November 2011 trip, via. my ski trips to the same town, including one ski trip just 2 months later where I went in & bought Gas & personally thanked him. I wish everyone in this world could still be this kind.
& So you can now speak with a little bit more fact in your statements than assumption.. -@TXJEANS: The answer is NO GB User, who made the comment/question about me that was more judgmental than rhetorical (without knowing the 1st fact about me or about the reality of the story or the possibility of sarcasm)... I am most certainly not a thief! I'm also an adult not a young teenager, I grew out of child's play when I grew out of being 11 & entered my Mid-20's & realized that life is what you make of it & positivity is the best thing that you can do for yourself, your family/friends & others! I Live my that.

never have and I'm not sure one even could. If one pays in cash, one needs to give the cash first to the attendant and then pump. and if one uses a card they have to approve you first.

No, did not even think of it. Although I did do the opposite. I paid, was on the phone, did not gas up and left gas station.

no, never occurred to me. also, perhaps the fear of drive offs is why stations require people to pre-pay.

Now @jcpatriots, we live in the same state... & We both know that isn't true everywhere, right?... Like Shell in Yarmouth (which doesn't even have security or cameras) or Value Mart in Harwich or MANY of the Full Serve stations that Close at night, don't have cameras & leave all their Fuel Pumps ON! lol.
I can count at least 10! I have only had to do this twice. Like that time in upstate western Vermont, in the Mountains near the water that separates VT from NY- Stewarts Shops don't all make you pay first, you can pump your own fuel & then it's up to you after that, but in the Middle of the winter, when your tank is accidentally empty because your credit card did not work but it did not tell you that at the pump, it just began fueling anyway & we had a 300 mile drive home & the temperature was -10F outside... Well, our options were limited... ;) But I do prefer to pay, only because I believe in karma & do not like conflict or negativity.

I never have and I hate those who do knowing they have because I work in this industry. Thives, that is what they are. They go to gas stations during peak hours knowing attendants are busy, especially going into the weekend. They fill-up their vehicles and leave. I wish all gas stations would have pre-paid pumps and it would eliminate this problem.

aren't there measures that prevent that sort of thing nowadays?
like pre-pay at the attendant?
(i wouldn't know; i'm in a state where Full service is in effect)
